Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Care and Education for HOSPITAL, the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Resident is responsible for responding to the spiritual needs of patients, their loved ones, and staff of all and no religious and spiritual traditions throughout HOSPITAL. The CPE Resident assesses patients’ needs; provides spiritual, emotional, religious, and existential support in diverse clinical settings; collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams of staff; and liaises with priests, Eucharistic ministers, and community clergy. The CPE Resident also provides staff support through Take10 visits and other initiatives. The CPE Resident functions as a team member of the Department of Spiritual Care and Education and throughout the Mount Sinai Health System, establishes collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary care team and other professionals, and actively participates in department initiatives. All CPE Residents share responsibility for overnight and weekend on-call shifts across several hospitals. CPE Residents are expected to actively participate in Mount Sinai’s Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) residency training program, which includes completing all written requirements and reading assignments and engaging actively in class with the goal of completing the educational requirements for chaplaincy certification.
