Duke University Hospital, located in Durham, North Carolina, is a highly-ranked facility with 1062 patient beds, offering comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center and an endo-surgery center. Duke University Health System is seeking a Registered Nurse for its NeuroScience Progressive Care Units (Stepdown), which are two 37-bed units located on the 8th and 9th floors of the new Duke Central Tower. These units provide exemplary care for patients and families, handling a variety of high-acuity cases similar to a community hospital ICU, such as patients with lumbar drains, EVDs, central lines, spinal trauma injuries, and epilepsy. The units care for medically complex patients who no longer require mechanical ventilation, with a patient ratio of 1:3/4. As a Clinical Nurse, the role involves prioritizing service and patient-centered care, providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care, and utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) to achieve departmental goals. The nurse will plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care guided by the DUHS Professional Practice model, participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, and research projects, and adhere to all applicable regulations and accrediting bodies. The position also emphasizes outstanding customer service and respectful relationships.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
  • Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide and supervise direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities.
  • Utilize the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department.
  • Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients guided by the DUHS Professional Practice model.
  • Participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, or other health-related projects as assigned.
  • Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Adhere to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.
  • Actively participate in outstanding customer service and accept responsibility for maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
