About The Position

Mater Hospital Springfield is seeking applications for an experienced and clinically confident Clinical Nurse – Day Surgery Unit to join us in a permanent, full-time role. Based at our Springfield campus, these roles will be part of a landmark moment in Queensland healthcare at Mater Hospital Springfield — opening early 2026. This state of the art facility will meet the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region. With a mix of public and private beds across ICU, maternity, emergency and medical, surgical services, it’s set to care for over 200,000 patients annually. This is a senior clinical leadership opportunity within a high-performing Day Surgery Unit, where advanced assessment skills, strong clinical judgement and the ability to coordinate complex patient care are essential. Working in a growing, modern hospital environment, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring safe, high-quality recovery care while supporting operational excellence within the unit.

Requirements

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA)
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a Day Surgery Unit or a relevant acute perioperative specialty
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant clinical specialty (postgraduate qualification highly regarded or working towards)
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Proven ability to coordinate care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
  • Strong leadership capability with experience mentoring or supporting junior staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across disciplines
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement and safe clinical outcomes
  • Understanding of professional standards, legislation and compliance requirements within acute healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Team lead – coordinate patient flow, prioritisation of care and day to day allocations of staff.
  • Rostering
  • Demonstrate leadership through clinical coaching, mentoring, role modelling best practice and promoting a collaborative and positive team culture.
  • Act as a clinical resource.
  • Support and mentor Registered and Enrolled Nurses within the unit.
  • Collaborate closely with Anaesthetists, Surgeons and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Escalate and manage clinical deterioration appropriately using advanced clinical reasoning.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, risk management and compliance activities.
  • Support operational leadership of the unit when delegated by the Nurse Unit Manager.
  • Ensure high standards of documentation, infection control and clinical governance – Monitor through audits.
