About The Position

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 2 with the Microbiology Team at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake. CLT 2s in the Microbiology Laboratory are experienced specimen processors that provide excellent patient care by performing inventory, ordering, receiving, and quality control on supplies. Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

• Uses hc1 to track and resolve problems regarding specimen quality, including labeling, stability and tube type.
• Refers technical questions to AD Medical Laboratory Scientist or Setup Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead.
• Monitors training of new employees and students and assesses status at the completion of the training.
• Performs or guides other qualified employees in doing direct observations for annual competency assessments.
• Performs blood culture volume monitoring quarterly and prepares the data to be sent to responsible areas.
• Inventories reagents in setup.
• Sets up quality control on media or for reagents when the CLT Lead is not available.
• Trained in inventory and purchasing when the CLT Lead is not available.
• Ensures the procedures and documents in Media lab are up to date.
• Makes minor edits to procedures.
• Reviews any major procedure changes.
• Keeps the printed backup for all manual up to date.
• Helps create the annual competency quizzes and any new procedure quizzes.
• Be a resource for CLT 1s.
• Possesses working knowledge of the laboratory information system including accessioning test requests, tracking specimens and looking up results.
• Batches and un-batches specimens from other divisions and transports them appropriately.
• Operates the WASP to process approved specimens, performs daily and monthly maintenance and troubleshoot errors.
• Processes bacterial and fungal cultures for all specimen types
• Prepares and stains direct smears including, but not limited to, Gram stains, KOH preps, Trichromes, and malaria preps.
• Answers phone calls and directs questions to appropriate personnel.
• Interacts with health care providers and responds to questions concerning specimens in a professional manner.
• Trouble shoots specimen issues and enters cases in hc1.
• Follows procedures and knows where to find information in Media Lab.
• Collects and cleans glassware, collects and disposes of biological waste, and unpacks supplies and reagents.
• Possess working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, such as the biological safety cabinet, centrifuges, cytocentrifuges, stomachers, fume hoods, incubators, dry baths, refrigerators and freezers.
• Sets up bacterial susceptibility testing including disk diffusion, gradient strips and microtiter panels.
• Communicates with co-workers so that specimen processing flows smoothly through breaks and between shifts.
• Demonstrates a helpful, courteous and respectful manner with co-workers.
• Keeps work area clean, organized and stocked.
