About The Position

The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute focuses on offering cancer patients an unparalleled network of coordinated services. The Clinical Assistant will work in a busy medical oncology practice, assisting the medical provider by performing all aspects of medical assisting, including phlebotomy and laboratory testing, in a medical oncology office/infusion center setting. This role is part of Connecticut’s most comprehensive healthcare network, where every moment matters.

Requirements

  • One (1) year experience as a phlebotomist
  • One (1) year experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a health care setting (preferably medical office/clinic)
  • High School Diploma

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Medical Assistant or pursuing certification in a certified educational program strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of medical oncology office practice and infusion strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist the medical provider by performing all aspects of medical assisting to include phlebotomy and laboratory testing in a busy medical oncology office/infusion center setting
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for the physician visit
  • Perform various preliminary portions of visit such as vital signs, weight and specimen collections (phlebotomy)
  • Provide a full range of administrative support in a medical office setting
  • Schedule appointments
  • Call pharmacies
  • Bill patients
  • Verify precertification’s for chemotherapy
  • Triage phone calls from patients, physicians and insurance companies
  • Maintain patient and business confidentiality to ensure that the needs of patient are met
  • Assist in maintaining an up-to-date electronic medical record filing system
  • Perform laboratory clerical functions accurately and efficiently for compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Perform processing of specimens and clerical activities
  • Perform laboratory specimen preparation and processing for the following departments: Cytology, Anatomic Pathology, and/or Microbiology
  • Assist in the support functions of the department and providers including, but not limited to, data entry, filing, reagent handling and preparation, slide preparation, planting of cultures
  • Assist with bone marrow biopsies by setting up the room and assisting the provider in the room during the procedure
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
