The Clinical Dietitian interprets the discipline of food and nutrition into the provision of a service designed to improve or maintain the nutrition/health status of both in and out patients.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree from an accredited college or university in Nutrition and Dietetics or related field preferred.
  • Completion of a didactic and clinical program in dietetics approved or accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Completion of a dietetic internship, or completion of a Master’s Degree program meeting the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics requirements for Dietitian Registration required.
  • Completion of the dietetic registration exam (or within 6 months of hire).
  • Maintenance of continuing education: meets requirements of Commission on Dietetic Registration and supports professional development in area assigned (disease/conditions/ages of patients).

  • Basic Life Support Required at hire
  • Integrative Agitation Management (IAM) Required within 30 days of hire
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively with patients, caregivers, physicians and hospital staff
  • Organizational skills and ability to accomplish work without direct daily supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work productively with people who have both similar and different backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Completes nutritional assessments and makes appropriate recommendations to achieve optimal nutritional status of patients.
  • Charts pertinent information indicating nutrition assessments and implementation of care plans in patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Evaluates provision of Medical Nutrition Therapy to individuals.
  • Consults with patients, family or caregiver regarding diet, diet instruction, discharge instruction and evaluates comprehension.
  • Monitors appropriate provision of enteral and/or parenteral nutrition to patients.
  • Monitors menus to assure compliance with prescribed diet order.
  • Participates as a member of the patient care team - integrating Medical Nutrition Therapy with other forms of therapy provided to the patient.
  • Participates on interdisciplinary teams, department committees, meetings and projects.
  • Meets and consults with health care committees, medical rounds and case conferences regarding nutrition care.
  • Actively involved with performance improvement projects.
  • Monitors administration of diet orders as needed.
  • Supervises tray line as needed.
  • Provides management support in the absence of the Director of Nutrition Services, Clinical Nutrition Manager, and/or Executive Chef.
  • Provides nutrition education programs for community and staff.
  • Acts as interdepartmental liaison with Nursing, Medical Staff and other departments.
  • Acts as preceptor to dietetic interns.
  • Adapts to changing demands and selects appropriate work methods.
  • Plans work time effectively to meet department deadlines.
  • Reliable in work habits.
  • Prepares educational materials for patient use.
  • Provides nutrition material to medical staff and other clinicians upon request.
  • Notifies Clinical Nutrition Manager when professional materials are needed.
  • Interprets professional guidelines and legislation regulations.
  • Participates in in-service training.
  • Consults with outpatients in collaboration with the Center for Integrative Health and Wellness.
  • Other duties as assigned.
