About The Position

La Clinica de La Raza is a non-profit, community-based health center established in 1971 to address health barriers and create better lives for the underserved. We have proudly grown into over 35 sites across Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano County. The Clinical Manager's role is centered on providing comprehensive training, leadership, and oversight for health educators and dietitians at La Clínica's primary care sites. The individual will engage in quality improvement initiatives and maintain up-to-date nutrition curricula and resources. The position requires collaboration with medical leadership to support clinical nutrition staff and programs, develop referral workflows, manage staff schedules, and track productivity. This role emphasizes standardization, training, effective communication and customer service, while also addressing patient care through nutrition screenings, assessments, and counseling for chronic disease management. Overall, this role is pivotal in enhancing clinical nutrition services and supporting the health of our patient population served.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of business and management principles related to strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing patient services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of patient satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records.
  • Working Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, onboarding, performance management and training.
  • Working knowledge and experience with Epic and Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with stakeholders and maintain good working relationships with other staff.
  • Ability to work across cultures and demonstrate support of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to develop, implement and evaluate nutrition education activities and coordinate them with other Departmental programs.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of nutrition, nutritional value of foods, interpretation and implementation of special diets, and meal planning and preparation that is culturally appropriate.
  • Knowledge of aspects of storing and/or preparing foods properly; interpretation and implementation of special diets; scopes functions and responsibilities of local health departments.
  • Must hold a current BLS (Basic Life Support) Certificate (with a 30-day grace period to obtain from date of hire).
  • Completion of Dietetic and Food administration Program from an accredited university, RD, or RD eligible (when working with Dietitians and in Clinic Health Educators).
  • One year experience working in a community health care setting (when working with Dietitians and in Clinic Health Educators).
  • Knowledge and experience with Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Division of Responsibilities.
  • Interpretation of anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary information, and determination of appropriate dietary advice that is culturally appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • English/Spanish oral and written proficiency preferred.
  • One year of experience in a supervisory or management position is preferred.
  • Master’s degree in nutrition/Dietetics preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide initial and ongoing training, consultation and oversight to clinical staff at La Clinica’s primary care locations.
  • Ensure new personnel receive a thorough orientation to La Clínica as well as site and job specific orientation.
  • Provide clinical leadership and supervision, maintaining clinical competence and a service-oriented approach to patient care.
  • Execute human resources supervisory responsibilities in accordance with La Clínica’s policies, procedures and applicable laws, consulting with Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Work with clinic leadership to supervise and oversee the hiring and training efforts, including, but not limited to managing and posting vacancies, interviewing, hiring, and training employees.
  • Observe clinical staff in individual and group settings and conduct chart audits; provide feedback to staff and supervisors for use in appraisals.
  • Work with medical operations leadership to develop, document, and implement clinical protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Help plan and conduct group staff trainings.
  • Participate in the development and modification of service programs as needed.
  • Maintain open, effective communication with staff, providers, support departments, and leadership.
  • Participate in organizational committees or work groups as assigned.
  • Work with site leadership to create staff schedules.
  • Track productivity of clinical staff and provide support to help achieve productivity goals.
  • Develop and periodically update standardized electronic documentation templates.
  • Act as consultant to agency regarding project development and grant submission.
  • Provide ongoing evaluation, service improvement processes to ensure patient care, staff relations, and operational efficiency are well integrated.
  • Document, investigate, and resolve complaints involving clinical staff, referring complex issues to the Associate Medical Director and Site Operations Manager.
  • Ensure customer service principles are upheld in all aspects of departmental operations.
  • Collect and review materials for education such as pamphlets, multimedia aids, books and handouts.
  • May assist in the development and evaluation of culturally relevant education materials.
  • Maintain documentation by charting SOAP notes in the electronic health record.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Facilitate periodic registered dietitian (RD) meetings and annual RD peer review.
  • Serve as preceptor to RD interns to assist in the career pipeline development of bilingual, bicultural dietitians.
  • May provide in-service nutrition/health education to staff and community partners.
  • Keep informed of the current literature on evidence-based best practices in nutrition counseling and nutrition-related chronic disease prevention and management.
  • Develop key messaging, coaching tools, and patient handouts focused on chronic disease prevention and self-management; update internal and external communication platforms.
  • Review, update, and approve nutrition-based chronic disease prevention curricula used by clinical health education staff to ensure it is based on the latest evidence and best practice.
  • Engage in regular quality improvement meetings with the Clinical Health Education leadership team to enhance systems and plan future trainings.
  • Participate in meetings related to nutrition, clinical health education and wellness as required/assigned.
  • Conduct nutrition screening, assessment and counseling, Medical Nutrition Therapy and implement nutrition care plans for patients with chronic disease (obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes) & prenatal patients.
  • May organize and participate in group nutrition education programs and medical group visits (i.e. diabetes, child obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension).
