Collects specimens and performs lab tests. Verifies test results using knowledge of principles, quality assurances, and instruments. Interprets results based on physiology. Responsible for moderate complexity testing. Recognizes problems and solves using preset strategies. Utilizes written Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa policies/procedures and universal precautions to properly collect, handle and store blood and other body fluid from patients as indicated above under “Age of Patients Served”. Performs all assigned tests with expected precision and accuracy, following all CLIA regulations. Performs differentials within policy guidelines. Reports in-house final results to medical staff including immediate notification of any critical values. Maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots laboratory equipment with accurate records of service. Obtains assistance from Regional Laboratory Technical Consultant or Regional Laboratory Manager, if needed. Performs records and evaluates all required quality control results. Performs proficiency testing. Prepares and processes specimens for testing including accurate documentation when ordering for reference lab testing. Maintains records and logs as required by regulatory agencies including controls, proficiency testing, work logs, temperature recording, maintenance records, and updates in policy/procedure manuals. Completes laboratory documentation including obtaining correct orders, billing codes, and diagnosis information. Obtains waiver of liability if appropriate. Reviews and corrects all electronic health records billing reports for accuracy Utilizes critical thinking skills to improve quality and customer satisfaction Assists in cost containment by maintaining an adequate quantity of supplies in assigned area. Communicates with patient and family according to provider orders in regards to collection of specimens, test results, follow-up and education. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors.
