About The Position

The Client Relationship Manager serves as the primary liaison between Telex and major electric utility clients. This is not a traditional sales role - it requires deep understanding of protection and control engineering, substation commissioning, and field service operations. You will build and maintain long-term partnerships with utility stakeholders (engineering managers, P&C supervisors, procurement leads, and project managers), ensure operational excellence, manage contract compliance, and identify opportunities to expand Telex's scope of services within existing and new accounts. The ideal candidate bridges the gap between technical service delivery and client satisfaction. You understand what happens in a substation, you can speak the language of protection engineers, and you know how to build trust with utility decision-makers through consistent follow-through, responsiveness, and results.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in one or more of the following: utility account management, field engineering services, protection & control engineering, substation commissioning, or technical sales/business development within the electric utility industry.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electric utility operations: protection & control systems, relay testing/commissioning, SCADA/RTU integration, substation construction and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with major OEM equipment and platforms (SEL, GE, ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, Doble, Omicron) and field-testing protocols.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain long-term client relationships with utility stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills - comfortable presenting to utility engineering managers and executives.
  • Proficiency with CRM software (Salesforce, HubSpot, MS Dynamics, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel 25% nationally to client sites, industry conferences, and Telex field locations.
  • Self-directed, accountable, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment with clear deliverables and metrics.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Direct experience at a major electric utility (IOU, co-op, or municipal) in an engineering, field services, procurement, or project management role.
  • Experience at SEL, Doble, Omicron, Hitachi Energy, or a similar OEM/service provider in a client-facing or field engineering capacity.
  • Existing relationships with protection & control decision-makers at utilities such as AEP, Dominion, Duke Energy, Southern Company, Xcel, NV Energy, Ameren, LCRA, CPS Energy, or similar.
  • NETA certification, PE license, or PMP certification.
  • Experience supporting IBEW-organized workforces.
  • Active participation in IEEE PES, PSRC, or other industry technical committees.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned utility accounts, building strong, trusted relationships with client stakeholders across engineering, project management, procurement, and field operations.
  • Conduct regular client visits (in-person and virtual) to maintain visibility, gather feedback, and identify emerging needs.
  • Own the client communication cadence: proactive updates, issue resolution, and strategic check-ins - not waiting for them to call you.
  • Analyze client needs to develop strategies that expand Telex's footprint within existing accounts: additional commissioning crews, engineering support, relay testing, RTAC/SCADA integration, training, and consulting services.
  • Identify and pursue new utility clients that align with Telex's core competencies in protection & control, substation commissioning, and field engineering services.
  • Build and maintain a visible, data-driven pipeline in the company CRM. Track opportunities from identification through close with clear milestones, probability, and expected revenue.
  • Make outbound calls, send emails, and actively prospect - relationship building is not limited to conferences and in-person meetings.
  • Coordinate with internal field directors, engineering teams, and project managers to ensure services are delivered on time, to spec, and within contract terms.
  • Provide regular client updates on project status, including resource availability, schedule changes, and technical milestones.
  • Serve as the escalation point for client concerns, working cross-functionally to resolve issues before they impact the relationship.
  • Support contract negotiations and renewals, working with operations leadership on MSA terms, rate cards, and change orders.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety requirements, utility-specific standards, and regulatory obligations (NERC, OSHA, client-specific protocols).
  • Monitor SLA performance and proactively address any compliance gaps.
  • Represent Telex at industry conferences (Texas A&M Protective Relay Conference, Western Protective Relay Conference, IEEE PES, Georgia Tech Fault & Disturbance Conference, DistribuTECH, and similar events).
  • Stay current on industry trends: grid modernization, IEC 61850 adoption, NERC compliance changes, utility capital programs, and competitive landscape.
  • Provide market intelligence back to leadership: what utilities are spending on, where the RFPs are, who's hiring, who's outsourcing.
