About The Position

The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the Classification Counselor 3 (CC3) position at Clallam Bay Corrections Center. Clallam Bay Corrections Center is a 900-bed male correctional facility located on the point of the Olympic Peninsula.  It is 50 miles west of Port Angeles and looks out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Vancouver Island.  This facility houses medium and close custody incarcerated individuals.  CBCC also operates a Restricted Housing Unit. Whether the work is inside a prison, in community corrections, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all incarcerated individuals can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.

Requirements

  • Six years of experience in adult corrections, juvenile corrections, rehabilitation, or social casework. (Formal education may substitute for up to 4 years of the required experience)
  • OR
  • One (1) year as a Classification Counselor 2 in Washington State service AND, two (2) years of Formal Education or Professional Counseling or Casework.
  • Write clearly, factually, and concisely.
  • Analyze and interpret data, weigh the risks, and make decisions or recommendations to address staff and incarcerated individual needs.
  • Identify and address incarcerated individual behavior/needs.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Apply conflict resolution skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) AND two (2) years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and technical expertise to other staff.
  • Mentor, train, monitor, and audit the work of subordinate and/or other lower-level staff.
  • Assign and evaluate work.
  • Handle complex and non-routine caseloads.
  • Investigate all information available for each arriving incarcerated individual and determine the incarcerated individual's documentation and programming needs.
  • Prepare and submit Incarcerated Individual Release Plan.
  • Counsel and inform incarcerated individuals regarding community resources and problems.
  • Maintain communication with incarcerated individuals to assist with attorney calls, child custody/support hearings with DCYF and courts, and family contact through crisis/emergency situations.
  • Regularly review and update incarcerated individual plans and programming needs.
  • Monitor incarcerated individual programming and behaviors.
  • Write correspondences, infractions, and incident reports.
  • Provide clear, concise, and consistent communication with staff, incarcerated individuals and stakeholders.
  • Complete paperwork for special visits, death bed visits, funeral outings, job referrals, End of Sentence Review packets, Extended Family Visits, marriages, psychological evaluation requests, incarcerated individual to incarcerated individual correspondence, and out of state and international transfers.
  • Testify before courts, boards and classification or disciplinary hearings.
  • Record, access, update, and retrieve incarcerated individual-related information from agency data base.
  • Perform essential audits and investigations.
