Thatcher Company is looking for a Class 8 Truck Shop Manager to lead the development of construction products at Thatcher Company headquarters, located in Salt Lake City, UT. Compensation $89,000- $105,000 The Truck Shop Manager is a key leadership role responsible for directing all aspects of fleet maintenance operations for chemical tankers and fleet equipment. This position ensures operational excellence through strong safety leadership, regulatory compliance, and a high‑quality customer experience. The role oversees shop supervisors and maintenance personnel while driving reliability, teamwork, productivity, and continuous improvement across all maintenance processes.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in fleet maintenance leadership, ideally involving chemical tankers or HazMat equipment.
  • Strong understanding of DOT/FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, and HazMat regulations.
  • Proven leadership ability managing multi‑shift teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated success fostering teamwork, collaboration, productivity, and safety.
  • Strong budgeting, planning, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with safety, operations, and customer‑facing teams.
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Work may involve hazardous chemicals and require strict adherence to PPE standards.
  • Environment includes high production, noise, and indoor/outdoor settings with temperature extremes.
  • Respirator use may be required.

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop shop supervisors, mechanics, and support staff with a strong focus on safety, productivity, and accountability.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and shared ownership across all maintenance operations.
  • Create a work environment where employees feel supported, engaged, and empowered to solve problems and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Conduct hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure staffing levels support operational demands, customer expectations, and workload balance.
  • Model positive leadership behaviors that reinforce professionalism, communication, and high performance.
  • Own and manage all maintenance programs, including preventive maintenance schedules, tank inspections, DOT compliance requirements, and equipment readiness.
  • Establish shop priorities, productivity goals, safety expectations, and quality standards.
  • Implement processes that promote efficient workflows, cross‑team coordination, and improved throughput.
  • Oversee creation and maintenance of SOPs, safety procedures, work instructions, and documentation systems (e.g., CMMS).
  • Manage maintenance budgets, shop tooling, equipment resources, and capital planning.
  • Work closely with dispatch, transportation, safety, and operations departments to deliver a reliable, customer‑focused maintenance service.
  • Ensure full compliance with DOT/FMCSA, OSHA, HazMat, EPA, and 49 CFR tanker regulations.
  • Lead regulatory audit preparation, internal compliance checks, and follow‑through on corrective action plans.
  • Review critical failures, safety-related defects, and recurring maintenance issues; develop preventive strategies.
  • Evaluate vendor performance, negotiate service contracts, and maintain strong supplier relationships.
  • Monitor and analyze fleet performance, safety results, and maintenance metrics to drive reliability‑centered maintenance strategies.
  • Lead initiatives that improve team productivity, shop efficiency, safety culture, compliance, uptime, and customer satisfaction.
  • Facilitate collaborative problem‑solving sessions to promote teamwork and operational innovation.
  • Analyze equipment lifecycle trends and recommend replacements or upgrades.
  • Champion technology adoption such as telematics, diagnostic tools, and CMMS enhancements.
