About The Position

The Renter’s Insurance Claims Adjuster investigates, evaluates, and resolves first-party renter’s claims (personal property, additional living expenses, loss of use, liability where applicable). This role balances technical coverage analysis with empathetic customer service, timely reserve stewardship, and accurate indemnity payments. The adjuster manages a personal caseload, ensures regulatory compliance, and partners with vendors, IA firms, and counsel to deliver outcomes aligned with AmTrust standards.

Requirements

  • 2–5+ years of personal lines property claims adjusting experience (renter’s/contents focus strongly preferred).
  • Working knowledge of policy interpretation , contents valuation , ALE/Loss of Use , and subrogation basics .
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to distill complex coverage into plain language.
  • Proficiency with claims systems (e.g., Guidewire/Sigma/ClaimCenter or similar), MS Office, and digital estimating tools.
  • Demonstrated compliance with state claims handling and documentation standards.
  • Licensing: Active adjuster licenses as required by domicile and any assigned states (e.g., TX, FL, LA).
  • Ability to obtain additional licenses within 90 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with renter’s theft claims, smoke/soot damage, water mitigation, and content inventory reconciliation.
  • Exposure to SIU referrals and early fraud indicators (e.g., prior loss history, documentation anomalies).
  • Experience in CAT environments and surge workload management.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; industry coursework

Responsibilities

  • Coverage & Liability Determination Review policy forms, endorsements, and exclusions to assess coverage for first-party losses (theft, fire/smoke, water damage, vandalism, weather-related events). Identify potential subrogation and recovery opportunities; refer to subro as appropriate.
  • Investigation & Evaluation Conduct recorded statements, obtain proof of loss, and collect documentation (receipts, photos, inventories). Order and assess reports (police, fire, vendor estimates); request SIU review on suspicious indicators. Evaluate damages and ACV/RCT where applicable; calculate ALE/Additional Living Expense and Loss of Use .
  • Negotiation & Settlement Present clear coverage positions, negotiate fair settlements within authority, and issue payments timely. Maintain accurate and supportable reserves; escalate above authority when warranted.
  • Customer Experience Serve as the single point of contact; set expectations for timelines, next steps, and documentation. Communicate empathetically and clearly via phone, email, and letter templates; handle escalations professionally.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Adhere to Unfair Claims Settlement Practices statutes, state DOI requirements, and internal QA standards. Document claim files contemporaneously with clear rationale and action plans.
  • Catastrophe (CAT) Support Participate in surge/CAT events (overtime/temporary reassignments as needed); maintain service levels during high-volume periods.
  • Continuous Improvement Identify fraud trends, process gaps, and training opportunities; contribute to playbook and template updates.
