About The Position

COMMISSIONER POWERS AND DUTIES: To conduct hearings for the purpose of reviewing disciplinary actions. Review is limited to suspensions, dismissals, and/or the demotion of employees covered by Civil Service under the Memphis City Charter. Commissioners have the power to administer oaths; subpoena and require the attendance of witnesses within the City of Memphis; have witnesses produce documents pertinent to the matters under review; and to examine said witnesses under oath in relation to matters under review. A Commissioner who is a licensed attorney, current or former judge, or person with prior experience as an administrative law judge for any local, state or federal agency is entitled to serve as a hearing officer. Hearing officers conduct hearings and may reverse or sustain the disciplinary action of the city.
