About The Position

Carlson McCain is seeking a Civil Field Engineer Intern for the summer of 2026. The primary duties for this position will be construction oversight and documentation under the direction of senior engineering staff. Specific tasks completed as part of construction oversight include reviewing plans and specifications, taking photographs, preparing daily construction reports, compiling testing and survey data, tabulating quantities, communicating with contractors and participating in construction meetings, among other tasks. Additional duties of the position may include operation of GPS survey equipment; sampling of various media including soil, groundwater, surface water, and solid waste; compiling field data and assisting with preparation of technical reports; and corresponding with clients, contractors, laboratories, etc. This position will be based in Plymouth, Minnesota. During field projects, the job will require extensive time out of the office and may require out of town travel, long days, and/or weekend work as dictated by the construction site location and schedule. Project sites feature rough terrain, moving machinery, limited accessibility and other conditions typical of construction and/or industrial sites. Carlson McCain will provide training and will assist with lodging and transportation arrangements for the duration of the project. Carlson McCain seeks to hire multiple interns to cover project sites which may be located in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wyoming.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing degree in Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related discipline
  • Familiarity with USCS soil classification system
  • Detail-oriented and proficient in documentation and technical writing
  • Good time management and ability to track hours and work independently
  • Clean driving record, and able to drive a company vehicle as necessary
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Capable of working long days, non-traditional work weeks, construction environment, outdoor working conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with CAD software and reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications a plus
