About The Position

Under general supervision, the Engineering Intern will support engineers and project managers in both design and fieldwork while gaining exposure to industry-standard practices and tools. The city will offer a flexible schedule to work around college classes as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Enrollment in, or recently graduated with a bachelor's or associate degree program with major coursework in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering systems.
  • Valid Utah Driver's License.
  • Basic engineering principles and practices, particularly in civil or transportation engineering.
  • Interest in municipal transportation and traffic engineering projects and designs.
  • Knowledge of transportation infrastructure, active transportation projects, and pedestrian crossing designs.
  • Strong analytical skills for processing and interpreting traffic data.
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.) for reporting and data management.
  • Written and verbal communication skills for reports, presentations, and collaboration.
  • Problem-solving issues related to construction, design, and project coordination.
  • Time management and organization handling multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies, tools, and methodologies in engineering.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with engineers, contractors, and city staff to resolve project-related issues.
  • Ability to conduct field surveys and collect accurate data in various environments with the direction of engineering staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Ability to learn about construction processes, construction materials, and assist with quality assurance for City projects.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and execute tasks with attention to quality and safety.

  • Skill with AutoCAD for drafting and design work

Responsibilities

  • Conducting field surveys, data collection, and on-site construction inspections.
  • Assisting in drafting transportation designs using AutoCAD.
  • Reviewing reports, studies, and standards.
  • Preparing bid documents, quantity takeoffs, and construction cost estimates.
  • Installing, downloading, and processing traffic data, and integrating it into GIS maps.
  • Providing advice and resolving issues related to construction and design.
  • Coordinating active transportation projects, including striping and signing projects.
