About The Position

This employee participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in the use of bridge engineering, transportation engineering, hydraulic engineering, or general civil engineering. DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position will prepare for a Civil Engineer position by completing a 12-month civil engineering training program. The work performed during this training period will develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering knowledge, skills, and abilities in a bridge engineering, transportation engineering, and/or soils engineering environment. This position could be permanently assigned in either Design, Construction , Operations or Maintenance. The Civil Engineer Trainee attends and actively participates in all assigned phases and rotations as designated in the Civil Engineer Training program. Rotations include assignments at the District Office, Field Operations, and County Maintenance. This employee performs civil engineering assignments to develop engineering skills and to achieve working knowledge of all phases of PennDOT operations. These assignments will include conducting preliminary engineering studies, analyzing field conditions, inspecting construction and maintenance projects, drafting geo-technical reports, preparing or reviewing designs for highway or bridge projects, conducting bridge safety inspections, analyzing traffic patterns, preparing recommendations to address traffic safety issues, conducting the testing of materials, and assisting in other related duties as required for the training phase. Requirements

  • Four years of civil engineering experience, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or in a closely related field, which includes or was supplemented by major course work in civil engineering; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • This position also requires possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
