About The Position

Tooele City is located 30 minutes southwest of Salt Lake City. We are known for our view of the Great Salt Lake, the beautiful Oquirrh Mountains, and as a hub for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. While we are still considered rural, both residential and commercial development continues and we are on the verge of moving from a 3rd to 2nd class community. Our population is currently estimated at 41,000. As the City Planner/Zoning Administrator, you will be a key member of our community development team serving as the primary contact for the public regarding matters such as planning, zoning, development review, and related ordinances. Daily duties include meeting with the public to facilitate the orderly progression of developments, reviewing planning projects for conformance with City ordinances, conducting feasibility studies and researching issues, representing the City at meetings, writing staff reports, and coordinating meetings of the Tooele City Planning Commission. Planning Commission generally meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. In addition, you will provide general supervision to ordinance enforcement staff, assisting code enforcement officers with zoning enforcement programs and policies. This includes interpreting codes, conducting site visits, and managing the abatement process as needed. Properly managed growth and exceptional customer service are priorities for Tooele City. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, geography, urban design, public administration, engineering, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of planning experience.
  • One (1) year working in a senior, leader or supervisory capacity.
  • Have a valid Utah driver's license (or obtain one within 1 month of hire), with at least 12 months of licensed driving experience and a driving record that meets City risk management and insurance standards.
  • Exceptional communication skills, strategic planning, listening, problem resolution, and leadership skills.

  • AICP certification highly desired.
