About The Position

The CIT/LIT Unit Head leads the camp’s Counselor-in-Training (CIT) and/or Leader-in-Training (LIT) programs, guiding teens through structured leadership development, team-building, and hands-on experience. This role is responsible for mentoring young leaders, coordinating daily training activities, and supporting their transition into future counselor roles. The Unit Head creates a positive, respectful learning environment rooted in the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 20 years old.
  • At least 1–2 years of experience working with youth in a camp, school, or recreation setting.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to model YMCA values in all interactions.
  • CPR/First Aid certified (or willing to obtain prior to camp).
  • Must pass background check and meet all YMCA child safety standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience mentoring or teaching teens or young adults preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate daily training sessions on leadership, child development, behavior management, and camp operations.
  • Mentor CITs/LITs by modeling professional behavior, guiding reflective discussions, and offering real-time feedback.
  • Monitor CIT/LIT progress and provide input for future hiring or development.
  • Develop and implement a structured curriculum that includes skill-building workshops, shadowing opportunities, team service projects, and evaluations.
  • Coordinate with unit heads and counselors to schedule CIT/LIT placements across age groups and activity areas.
  • Create opportunities for peer bonding and leadership through group challenges and reflective activities.
  • Supervise CITs/LITs during all program hours, including transitions, breaks, and camper interactions.
  • Ensure participants follow YMCA expectations and uphold behavior standards that align with our mission.
  • Support the emotional and social needs of each CIT/LIT as they navigate leadership challenges and successes.
  • Maintain regular communication with camp leadership about CIT/LIT development, concerns, and successes.
  • Assist in writing end-of-session evaluations and participant feedback forms.
  • Communicate with families when needed to support the learning journey of each participant.
