About The Position

The work involves planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating leisure service programs involving childcare. The coordinator will hire, evaluate, and train staff at childcare sites. There is latitude for independent judgment in creating programs and following established policies and procedures. Work is performed under the general direction of a Recreation Program Manager.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) with two (2) years of college course work in leisure services or child development or related field, and two (2) years of directly related experience (may include work in leisure services, after school programs or summer camp programs) or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Credentials required include: School Age Credential within 1 year of hire, and Director's Credential within 18 months of hire, CPR and First Aid within 6 months of hire
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and philosophies of childcare programs
  • Knowledge of childcare development, age-appropriate activities, and behavior modification for children
  • Knowledge of the regulations of the license board standards that are required to operate the program
  • Ability to multi-task, maintain budget, lead staff, plan, organize, and implement daily lesson plans
  • Ability to observe children's location and behavior in creating a safe environment
  • Ability to maintain effective relations with children, parents, and staff
  • Must have computer proficiency
  • Requires good judgment, patience, and problem-solving with children and parents
  • Ability to hire, train, and evaluate staff
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Directs staff in program development and direct care of children
  • Oversees lesson plans produced by each staff member and ensures that they are both completed and implemented
  • Maintains daily staff rosters that reflect coverage and required credentials on site
  • Monitors a program budget of expenses and revenues
  • Makes recommendations and maintains facility and program rules and regulations
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates multiple leisure programs for childcare programs
  • Develops special events by assessing needs, planning and organizing activities, supervising the event, and conducting an event evaluation
  • Responsibilities include coordination of a before and after school program, directing a summer camp, and/or coordinating school-out days and holiday camps
  • Schedules field trips, guest speakers, and special programs for parents
  • Creates group rosters, maintains sign-in and sign-out sheets, and completes attendance roster
  • Maintains all children's records, personnel records, and facility records as required by the license board
  • Provides a monthly newsletter for parents
  • Collects payments and ensures that program fees are paid by those registered, on a payment plan, on scholarship, or from a special funding source
  • Purchases needed supplies for childcare programs
  • Monitors all training and requirements of the license board; includes Staff Member In Charge (SMIC), Child Development Associate (CDA), Director's Credentials, 40 clock hours of training, 10 hours special needs course, and ensures that all staff receive 10 hours of in-service training annually
  • May schedule trips or guest speakers
  • Ensures security of area or facility; enforces rules, regulations and safety precautions; maintains order and discipline
  • Administers first aid or seeks appropriate help. Completes injury, incident, and suspension reports
  • Assist with program registrations, memberships, and collecting money
  • Prepares flyers, brochures, and enrollment packets
  • Sets up equipment and rooms as the program dictates
  • Supports honest and transparent decision-making
  • Collaborates with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments
  • Openly exhibits a positive attitude, in words and action, and encourages others to do the same
  • Performs related work as required.
