About The Position

General Description: Under direct supervision, the student supports the Child Life, Integrative and Creative Care department by learning, applying hands on interactions, and assisting in patient care under the supervision of certified child life specialists. This role is designed for students actively seeking certification in child life, providing hands-on learning experience in a clinical environment to complement academic studies. Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. Designs activities that promote the social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth of children. Utilizes health care play, developmentally appropriate activities, volunteers and educational materials to help children and families adjust to the hospital environment and to prepare them for events related to illness and hospitalization. Provides hands on clinical interactions and interventions to promote positive coping during hospitalization. Attends student development groups as well as debriefing sessions with preceptors and student/program coordinators. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Working towards a bachelor’s degree in child life or a related field.
  • Completing the 10 required specific child life educational courses.
  • Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required within 30 days of start date.
  • Students expected to be eager to learn and open to feedback.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience working and volunteering with children and families, including well children and children and families in stressful situations, healthcare settings, and/or programs designed for children with special needs preferred.
