About The Position

ROOF ABOVE Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,400 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019. POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief of Staff is a new senior leader on the executive team of Roof Above. This role will be a critical extension of the CEO, responsible for increasing the organization’s capacity to execute its mission with clarity, alignment, and accountability while also working to with a focus on protecting organizational culture fueled by our four core values and focused on mission. The Chief of Staff plays a critical role in shaping and sustaining a high-performing, values-driven culture, while building the operational systems, leadership practices, and organizational rhythms required to scale impact. This role is accountable for strengthening cross-functional alignment, improving internal processes, and ensuring that leaders across Roof Above are equipped to execute effectively. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief of Staff also creates leverage for the CEO by managing priorities, advancing strategic initiatives, and ensuring follow-through across the executive team. The role oversees Human Resources and Information Technology and partners closely with senior leaders to drive continuous improvement in how the organization works. This is meaningful, high‑stakes work that is not always tidy. Success in this role requires comfort with complexity and ambiguity, an appreciation for the human and operational realities of the organization, and the ability to hold seriousness and perspective at the same time. Flexibility, empathy, resilience, and a sense of humor are essential in meeting the work as it authentically shows up each day.

Requirements

  • Passion for the mission of Roof Above and our core values
  • A bachelor’s degree is required with a preference for graduate degree (MBA, MSOD, or other applicable degree)
  • Deep knowledge of leadership and organizational culture best practices. Experience within a non-profit setting preferred.
  • Proven success in change management and multi-stakeholder environments
  • Ability to work at a highly strategic level with no concerns with delving into the weeds
  • Desire to move ideas into effective action
  • Excellent listener and observer of an organization at work
  • Must pass pre-employment and/or random drug and alcohol screenings as a condition of hire and/or ongoing employment.
  • Must have reliable transportation to work.
  • Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as steward of Roof Above’s culture, ensuring values are translated to behaviors, systems and leadership best practices
  • Review and update processes and policies to ensure that they are supportive of the working environment we hope to nurture
  • Ensure HR processes, specifically, are designed for talent development, performance management and staff experience, in line with values
  • Develop and support activities and committees that strive to protect and improve our organizational culture
  • Partner with the CEO and executive team to translate strategic priorities into clear goals, plans, and measurable outcomes
  • Support annual and quarterly employee goal setting, along with building positive practices of accountability
  • Review of organizational processes and work with team leaders to document and improve process throughout the organization
  • Establish and manage systems to track progress and drive accountability against stated key results
  • Review and support organizational and leadership meeting cadences to support effective and efficient communication, decision-making, and action. It is anticipated this role will likely take on significant leadership of regular meetings within the organization, including senior leadership team and extended leadership team.
  • Supervise Human Resources and Information Technology within the organization and ensure these roles are deeply aligned with desired organizational culture. Currently, the Human Resources department is comprised of 3 full-time staff members: Director of HR, HR Manager, and HR Associate. Our IT department is a team of one, with a Director of IT who manages both strategic initiatives and operational tasks with limited support from contracted services.
  • Develop and implement large change management initiatives particularly within human resources (examples include: organizational process to develop team members, the development of pay bands)
  • Extend the capacity of the executive leadership team by leading special projects as needed, including internal infrastructure initiatives and efforts responding to changing community needs.
