About The Position

Join Genentech during its fiftieth year, a landmark of "entrepreneurial grit and discovery." This leadership role will directly shape the company's ability to deliver life-changing foundational therapies while advancing your career in a supportive, growth-oriented environment. Genentech is looking for a senior strategic partner to serve as the Chief of Staff & Head of Operations and Administration for the Ophthalmology Squad and Network for USCMG. This is a critical leadership opportunity to shape a highly volatile, fiercely competitive therapeutic area during a period of unprecedented growth and possibility, while pioneering Genentech’s Commercial Portfolio Organization "Velocity with Purpose" strategy. As the Chief of Staff & Head of Operations and Administration, you will serve as a high-impact internal management consultant, trusted advisor, and "capacity multiplier" for the Ophthalmology Squad Leader, Squad, and Network. You will navigate a profound clinical, macroeconomic, and operational evolution in the retinal disease landscape, standing at the forefront of the fight against vision loss. You will lead the "US Ophthalmology Center Square"—the operational nerve center of the therapeutic area—seamlessly blending three distinct strategic, operational, and delivery pillars: serving as the Head of Operations, managing a dedicated team of administrative professionals and Operations Managers, and acting as the primary conduit for cross-functional communications and strategy across the Ophthalmology ecosystem.

Requirements

  • 10+ years experience in operations, communications, or marketing within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Operational discipline and strategic field or customer insight
  • Extensive project management expertise, including leading complex, cross-functional initiatives in a global matrix environment
  • Proven ability to apply sophisticated management consulting frameworks (HTA, VoC, Change Management) to solve complex biopharmaceutical challenges
  • Proven experience as a strategic thought partner to senior leaders, with a track record of driving change in complex environments
  • Commitment to compliance with all corporate policies and guidelines

Responsibilities

  • Act as a confidential sounding board and thought partner to the Squad Leader, deploying advanced frameworks (Value-Based Pricing, McKinsey 7S, Kotter's Change Model) to navigate extreme market volatility, pricing pressures, and biosimilar deflation.
  • Synthesize clinical efficacy data with health economic outcomes, mapping the patient journey to identify friction points and optimize commercial positioning against emerging competitive threats.
  • Manage the design and delivery of the Ophthalmology Therapeutic Area Operating Rhythm (Goals, Objectives, Leading Indicator KPI, Budgets and Operational Expense and Resource Management) with Finance and other stakeholders.
  • Orchestrate the operational deployment of complex, large-scale initiatives, including the rollout of continuous-delivery ocular implants (e.g., Susvimo) and the systemic shift toward Office-Based Surgery (OBS) centers.
  • Utilize Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) models to benchmark and optimize logistics for surgical implants and future cell therapy launches.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Operations Managers and Administrative professionals, driving a rigorous delegation process that handles operational "plumbing" so you can focus on high-value strategic synthesis.
  • Embody the VACC leadership framework (Visionary, Architect, Coach, Catalyst) to remove operational bottlenecks, decentralize decision-making, and foster a psychologically safe, high-performing culture.
  • Act as the critical bridge connecting the Ophthalmology Squad with the broader Genentech matrix (gRED, Pharma Technical Operations, Global Medical Affairs), ensuring uniform alignment with our 2026 "Velocity with Purpose" mandate.
  • Orchestrate the narrative for the Squad Leader, drafting strategic communications that inspire internal networks and external stakeholders while accelerating our transition to an agile, "System 1.0" operational model.
