Riverside is seeking a Chief Medical Officer for Riverside Walter Reed Hospital located in Gloucester, Virginia In this role: Position Profile: Chief Medical Officer FTE: 0.5 Riverside Walter Reed Hospital (RWRH) Reports to: Chief Clinical Operations Officer Works in Dyad with: Hospital President Partners with: Specialty Service Line Chiefs, Chief Medical Officers, Hospital Administrative and Corporate Leadership FLSA Status: Exempt Location: Gloucester, VA I. Position Summary The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital serves as the senior physician leader responsible for advancing clinical quality, patient safety, medical staff engagement, and care transformation across the hospital. The CMO is the primary liaison between medical staff, hospital leadership, and Riverside Health System leadership, ensuring clinical excellence and operational performance consistent with system standards and the mission of improving health and wellness for the community. The CMO promotes a safety-first culture , leads integration of evidence‑based clinical practice, and partners with nursing, operations, and service line leaders to enhance performance, patient experience, and physician alignment.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree with an active, unrestricted Virginia medical license (or eligibility).
  • Board certification in an appropriate specialty.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of clinical practice with demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Prior leadership roles such as Physician Practice Director, Medical Director, Department Chief, Medical Staff leadership roles or equivalent.
  • Experience in quality improvement, medical staff governance, and clinical operations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict‑management skills.
  • Ability to lead through influence and collaboration in a matrixed health system.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based medicine, regulatory standards, and hospital operations.
  • Commitment to service excellence and the mission of Riverside Health System.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership & Quality: Lead the prioritization and execution of quality improvement initiatives across the hospital. Champion patient safety and performance improvement programs, reducing clinical variation and supporting best‑practice care pathways. Collaborate with System and Facility Quality Management to develop, monitor, and improve clinical quality metrics, utilization, and outcomes.
  • Medical Staff Engagement & Governance: Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and collegiality among the medical staff. Ensure medical staff operate within established standards, delineation of privileges, bylaws, and regulatory requirements. Support credentialing, peer review processes, and recruitment of physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Operational Partnership & Service Line Collaboration: Work closely with service line chiefs and administrative leaders to optimize clinical operations, throughput, and resource utilization. Collaborate with other CMOs and attend meetings led by RRMC CMO Partner with surgical and specialty service leadership to implement relevant protocols such as ERAS, clinical pathways, and evidence‑based practice standards. Support development and optimization of imaging, emergency, inpatient, ICU, and diagnostic capabilities within RWRH’s state‑of-the‑art environment (e.g., 22‑bed ED, ICU, advanced imaging) Work in coordination of IC3 clinical and administrative leadership to ensure optimization of patient transport as well as virtual clinical services
  • Patient Experience & Service Excellence: Lead patient experience initiatives and support service recovery programs. Collaborate with nursing leadership to maintain high standards of communication, rounding, inter‑disciplinary coordination, and responsiveness.
  • Strategic Planning & Organizational Leadership: Participate in leadership team meetings, strategic planning, budget preparation, and resource evaluation. Attend facility MEC meetings Represent RWRH in community and system initiatives. Attend RMG Board Meetings and related activities Support alignment with RMG and system-wide clinical integration and consensus priorities.
  • Crisis, Regulatory, & Compliance Oversight: Ensure compliance with accrediting bodies, federal and state regulatory standards, and system policies. Serve as a key leader during safety events, emergent operational challenges, and regulatory surveys. Support emergency preparedness efforts.
  • Transition, Succession & Medical Staff Stability: Ensure continuity of physician leadership, including supporting transitions when needed
