About The Position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for overseeing the financial management, planning, and fiscal operations of the organization. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO ensures the organization's financial stability, promotes sustainability, strengthens financial systems, and supports strategic decision-making through high-quality financial analysis and forecasting. The CFO also leads continuous improvement initiatives related to finance, budgeting, and reporting processes and ensures compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a senior financial leadership role
  • Expertise in nonprofit accounting, financial management, grant compliance, and federal/state funding requirements (e.g., Uniform Guidance, OMB Circulars).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience supervising and managing others.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, audit standards, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial audiences.
  • Passion for the organization’s mission and values.
  • Pass agency paid criminal justice screening including fingerprints.
  • Pass agency paid TB (Tuberculosis) screening.
  • Pass agency paid for health screening and/or drug testing (if required).
  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance coverage.
  • Pass agency paid MVR clearance with no more than 2 points - if you are under the age of 25 our insurance company will not allow any points.
  • Represent the agency in a professional and competent manner.
  • Advocate for the best interests of the agency and clients we serve.

  • Performance of assigned duties with a positive attitude and in the spirit of teamwork, collaboration and cooperation.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Travel to additional site locations (up to 30 miles).
  • Participates in and/or supports Agency fund development activities and events.
  • Preparation of assigned reports, work records, statistical data, job performance evaluations, work plans, etc. in a timely manner.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA, MBA, or Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience in organizational process improvement and change management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the chief financial strategist, providing analysis, forecasting, and advice to support executive leadership and Board decision-making.
  • Lead the development and implementation of multi-year financial plans aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Advise the CEO and Board on financial risks, opportunities, and strategic investments.
  • Oversee all aspects of financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, billing, financial reporting, payroll, and cash management.
  • Develop and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports, grant reports, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders, including Board committees and funders.
  • Lead the agency’s annual budget development process, working collaboratively with department heads and program directors.
  • Monitor and report on actual financial performance versus budget, proactively addressing variances.
  • Develop rolling forecasts to adapt to changing financial conditions and funding environments.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including nonprofit financial management standards.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and lead the annual audit process, preparing necessary documentation and responding to audit findings.
  • Develop and maintain effective risk management policies and insurance coverage.
  • Drive continuous improvement in finance and accounting processes to increase efficiency, transparency, and accuracy.
  • Oversee financial system upgrades and implementation projects that enhance reporting capabilities and data integrity.
  • Streamline financial workflows to eliminate waste and support organizational scalability.
  • Collaborate closely with the COO, CPO, Development team, and Program leadership to align financial operations with mission-driven priorities.
  • Support programmatic growth by ensuring that financial planning incorporates operational and programmatic realities.
  • Serve as a financial thought partner across departments to foster a culture of financial responsibility and sustainability.
  • Contribute to team effort by performing other duties and completing special projects as assigned.
