About The Position

The Role: As the Service Area Chief Financial Officer , you will serve as a key member of the service area leadership decision‑making team, partnering closely with local ministry leadership to guide financial strategy, operational performance, and long‑term sustainability. You will collaborate with regional and local executives to set strategic direction, achieve operational goals, ensure fiscal discipline, and support ongoing system transformation efforts. In this highly influential role, you will also represent the service area in finance leadership capacities across joint ventures, boards, and management teams as delegated by the Regional CFO. Reporting directly to the Regional CFO—with a matrixed partnership to Service Area and local ministry Chief Executives—you will play a central role in driving financial excellence and advancing our mission. What You’ll Do:

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience: 10+ years of closely related experience.
  • 10+ years of leadership responsibility.
  • Financial Expertise: Ability to apply mathematical methods and analytical reasoning to complex problems. Strong competency in interpreting financial data and using insights to drive decisions. Proven problem‑solving skills and ability to apply financial principles effectively.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional written communication tailored to diverse audiences. Ability to develop and deliver compelling presentations in person or virtually. Strong collaboration, relationship‑building, and conflict‑management abilities. Skilled at engaging with executive leadership, operational teams, and community partners.
  • Healthcare Knowledge: Understanding of trends, shifts, and emerging developments within healthcare.
  • Decision‑Making & Organizational Strength: Ability to represent the organization with professionalism and credibility. High accuracy, even under pressure. Strong judgment and analytical decision‑making. Advanced organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Productivity & Execution: Skilled at working within tight timelines and managing multiple priorities. Ability to drive projects to completion and deliver measurable outcomes. Proven ability to establish and evaluate performance metrics.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated leadership in project planning, oversight, and budget management. Ability to coordinate operational teams and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and desktop productivity tools. Working knowledge of office practices and healthcare information technology (including EMRs, registries, dashboards, and other digital tools).

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance (Preferred).
  • CPA, HFMA, or FACHE (Preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Mission‑Driven Leadership: Carry out and champion the mission, vision, and values of Providence St. Joseph Health.
  • Strategic Partner: Provide leadership and insight to ensure achievement of service area operating results and long‑term strategic goals.
  • Performance Enhancer: Collaborate with leadership teams to diagnose issues, solve complex problems, and implement initiatives that strengthen financial performance.
  • Budget Architect: Direct the details, development, and execution of service area budgets.
  • Benchmark Guardian: Manage to appropriate financial metrics, benchmarks, and reporting indicators to ensure accountability and accuracy.
  • Operational Advisor: Partner with the Service Area CEO during monthly operating reviews to analyze performance and support decision‑making.
  • Representative & Board Leader: Serve on joint venture boards or committees as assigned by regional leadership.
  • Cross‑Functional Connector: Work closely with shared services partners—including Revenue Cycle, Accounting, Reimbursement, Resource Engineering, and Hospitality—on reporting, performance improvement, and operational initiatives.
  • Community Finance Liaison: Represent finance on local and geographic boards/committees and communicate regularly with leaders and employees on financial matters.
  • Partnership Builder: Assist the Regional CFO in managing relationships with key shared services such as Revenue Cycle, Real Estate & Facilities, and System Accounting & Finance.
  • Financial Steward: Exercise signature authority and ensure adherence to state, federal, and organizational authority matrix requirements.
