What this job involves: The Chief Engineer, under the oversight of the Director of Operations, Deputy Director of Operations, and Account Director, oversees the efficient, safe, and responsible operation of all building systems and equipment while leading the second-shift engineering team at Rush University Medical Center. You will manage a diverse team currently comprised of 2 HVAC technicians, 3 plumbers, 3 electricians, and 2 building maintenance workers. This role demands demonstrating technical expertise in multiple craft areas (electrical, HVAC, plumbing) and being multi-skilled in all others to successfully repair, maintain, restore, and replace various building operational components independently and as a teacher supplying team support. This position requires the Chief Engineer to be on-site. This is a Local 399 Union position.

Requirements

  • Valid Stationary Engineers License in the City of Chicago
  • 7+ years of related experience, especially as a Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or similar role
  • People management experience (leading a team)
  • Universal CFC EPA certification
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfort using ladders up to 30 feet tall
  • Ability to frequently climb, bend, kneel, lift, and/or drive
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Lead and demonstrate a safety-first culture

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems
  • Supervise and manage engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, coaching, and personal development
  • Coordinate with first-shift and third-shift engineering teams to ensure smooth handoff of in-progress work and communication of issues affecting the campus
  • Perform various preventive maintenance tasks as needed and provide hands-on support
  • Create and routinely update a documented plan that includes preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance procedures
  • Participate regularly in client-facing and property team communications
  • Provide effective, accurate, and timely communication of issues affecting the campus with management and the Client via phone, radio, email, Teams, and any other methods deemed necessary
  • Lead, create, and manage the engineering budget and participate in the overall operating budget process
  • Assist in the development of a capital improvement plan
  • Select, schedule, supervise, and direct contractors; monitor and document performance.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies and service calls
  • Lead and organize ongoing technical, safety, and operational process training programs and procedures
  • Conduct regular rounding, adhering to regulatory compliance
  • Manage CMMS and BAS systems
  • Regularly work in teams and foster collaboration between trades and shifts to deliver a quality final product to the Client
  • Conduct risk assessment and mitigation
  • Perform other duties as requested by the management team and/or client
