About The Position

ON.energy is building the power infrastructure that makes the AI era possible. As AI demand surges past what the grid and traditional data centers can support, ON.energy provides a new class of power technology proven at gigawatt scale and trusted by the world’s leading cloud and AI companies. Our systems are already deployed across 2.5 GW of hyper-scale campuses, validated by top U.S. national labs, and certified for grid-safe operation by major utilities. With real products in the field, we’re scaling faster than the grid can, transforming power from a bottleneck into a competitive advantage for the companies building the future. Chief Electrical Engineer Role Overview The Chief Electrical Engineer serves as a senior technical advisor and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for ON.Energy’s electrical and power systems. This role provides high-level engineering support for critical field issues and serves as a key technical consultant during the product design phase and when modifications are required. You will act as a bridge between design theory and real-world operational performance, ensuring electrical safety, system reliability, and grid compliance through data-driven analysis and expert review.

Requirements

  • 20+ years of electrical engineering experience, specifically within Battery Energy Storage (BESS), Medium/High Voltage systems, Medium Voltage UPS, Power Conversion Systems (PCS), or Utility-Scale Power Generation.
  • Expertise in Power Studies: Hands-on experience or deep knowledge of simulation tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM, or PSS/E) to solve complex protection and coordination challenges.
  • Strategic Problem Solver: Proven ability to diagnose complex electrical failures in the field (e.g., ground faults, inverter synchronization issues) and translate them into actionable design improvements.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate technical risks and complex electrical concepts clearly to both internal stakeholders and external utility partners.

Responsibilities

  • Field Technical Support: Serve as the senior technical point of contact for complex or unresolved electrical issues at project sites, from equipment through the decommissioning phase.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Provide expert oversight and direction for electrical failure investigations (e.g., arc flash incidents, harmonic issues, or protection trips), ensuring modifications are technically sound and address the core issue.
  • SME Consultation: Act as a "Level 2" support resource for sales engineering, providing technical validation for non-standard site requirements, utility interconnection requests, or client-specific electrical configurations.
  • Technical Reviews: Participate as a Subject Matter Expert in Design Reviews and Stage-Gate Reviews, identifying potential electrical risks, protection gaps, or efficiency losses before they reach the field.
  • Product Modification: Provide technical guidance on hardware updates, firmware-hardware compatibility, or component substitutions based on field performance data and evolving safety standards (UL, NFPA, IEEE).
  • Requirement Support: Assist the product team in defining electrical requirements for new hardware, ensuring they are grounded in realistic engineering constraints and grid-code requirements.
  • Advanced Analysis: Perform or oversee electrical simulations, including Power Studies (Short Circuit, Coordination, Arc Flash).
  • Electrical Resilience: Ensure all electrical designs and site-specific deployments are validated against extreme site conditions and utility requirements, including:
  • Power Quality: Validating harmonic profiles and voltage stability at the Point of Interconnection (POI).
  • Protection & Control: Overseeing the logic and reliability of the protection scheme, Battery Management System (BMS), Power Conversion System, (PCS) and Energy Management System (EMS).
  • Environmental Resilience: Ensuring electrical enclosures and insulation systems are rated for high-altitude, high-humidity, or coastal environments.
