About The Position

The Department of Surgery and the Heart and Vascular Center at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville (UF COM-J), is seeking to hire a Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The successful candidate will receive an appointment at the tenure or non-tenure accruing level of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor ranks. The successful candidate will preferably have a minimum of 8 years of experience and be able to perform all aspects of advanced/complex adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. The successful candidate should be proficient in coronary artery bypass, valve surgery (open and minimally invasive), arrhythmia surgery, thoracic aortic surgery, thoracoscopic and robotic lung resection and mediastinal surgery. The Department of Surgery and the Heart and Vascular Center boast a team of board-certified and fellowship-trained cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons who work side by side to care for patients with cardiac, thoracic, and vascular conditions. This position will academically report to the Chair of the Department of Surgery and operationally to the Medical Director of the Heart and Vascular Center at the -UF COM-J. Major responsibilities include patient care, teaching, and research as outlined below. The Department of Surgery and the Heart and Vascular Center are extremely active clinically, academically and educationally. Pioneering innovative approaches to the management of patients with cardiovascular disease, we are poised for significant growth in heart and vascular care as we expand the elective surgical practice throughout the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia region. Our mission and vision is to provide high-quality, comprehensive, and compassionate cardiovascular care and be the region's most valued Heart and Vascular Center. UF Cardiothoracic Surgery services are provided at the UF Health Heart and Vascular Center - Jacksonville which has fully integrated, comprehensive heart programs, including coronary/structural/peripheral interventional, electrophysiology, nuclear cardiology, and advanced cardiac imaging. The UF Health Heart and Vascular Center currently has 6 practice locations throughout the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia region and is home to 27 full-time faculty, including 2 cardiothoracic surgeons, 15 APPs, 26 cardiology and subspecialty fellows. Cardiothoracic Surgery is performed at 2 practice locations. The successful candidate will receive a UF COM-J faculty appointment at the tenure or non-tenure accruing level of Assistant, Associate, or Professor level based on their background and experience. This is a full-time 1.0 FTE clinical faculty position, with the expectation that the candidate will perform teaching duties and clinical research commensurate with an academic appointment. The program encompasses the full spectrum of adult cardiothoracic surgery including TAVR, robotic thoracic surgery, TEVAR, minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve surgery. Ample opportunities exist for collaboration with UF College of Medicine (Jacksonville and Gainesville) surgeons. Candidate will participate in on-call schedule. He or she must be eligible for unrestricted licensure in the state of Florida.

Requirements

  • MD/DO or equivalent degree from accredited institution.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligibility in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Eligible for or active Florida license

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated record of excellence in advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures and program leadership.
  • Experience in advanced and complex cardiothoracic procedures including: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)/ Aortic surgery including TEVAR / Complex valvular surgery (including minimally invasive techniques) /Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation /TAVR / Robotic Surg / Minimally Invasive / ECMO/LVAD placement.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a Cardiothoracic surgeon
  • Academic experiences with evidence of teaching, program development and clinical scholarship.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the Cardiothoracic Surgery within the Heart & Vascular Center to provide adequate supervision and evaluation of the clinical work, and implement policies and procedures as needed to maintain and improve services and programs.
  • Overseeing the delivery of high-quality clinical care in Cardiothoracic Surgery within the Heart & Vascular Center.
  • Oversight of cardiothoracic surgery operations within the Heart & Vascular Center, including patient care, quality control, and compliance with standards, including those set by accrediting bodies
  • Manage, direct, and participate in activities as needed in order to comply with administrative policies and external accreditation requirements, including Joint Commission and other regulations.
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of high-quality physicians to complement existing medical staff and meet patient needs.
  • Oversight of the day-to-day cardiothoracic operations of the Heart & Vascular Center, including budgeting, resource allocation, and overall leadership and management of cardiothoracic operations, including equipment, vendor relations, and staffing.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards, and implement quality improvement programs, including case study reviews, and other activities to continuously enhance patient care.
  • Collaborate with the Center's multidisciplinary team, including interventional cardiology and vascular surgery, to deliver high-quality care.
  • Attend departmental and organizational leadership meetings.
  • Work closely with other medical directors, hospital administrators, and community partners to improve cardiothoracic care within the healthcare system.
  • Participate directly in patient care, including providing consultations, performing procedures, and managing complex cases.
  • Rotate on a regular basis with Cardiothoracic Surgery colleagues on the call schedules and be in charge of developing all call schedules.
  • Arrange and facilitate divisional meetings, guest speaker courses and other presentations/classes pertaining to Cardiothoracic Surgery in order to ensure the highest quality of education for medical staff.
  • In coordination with general surgery, cardiology and interventional cardiology program directors deliver level appropriate didactic educational programs to medical students, general surgery residents and cardiology and subspecialty fellows.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth among staff, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals ensuring that they are adequately trained and experienced to provide cardiothoracic care.
  • Promote research and education in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
