About The Position

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer to join their exemplary leadership team. The Chief Administrative Officer provides administrative leadership and operational expertise for the integration of the clinical, educational, and research programs of the department. The Department of Medicine has multiple affiliations including UW Health (UWH), UW School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH), the UW Medical Foundation (UWMF), the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA), each with unique administrative structures, systems and varying rules, regulations, bylaws, and missions. The Department of Medicine is organized into sub-specialty divisions of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine; Cardiovascular Medicine; Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism; Gastroenterology and Hepatology; General Internal Medicine; Geriatrics and Gerontology; Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Care; Hospital Medicine; Infectious Disease; Nephrology; and Rheumatology. Department of Medicine faculty lead research centers, institutes, and programs at the UW SMPH and on UW-Madison campus including the Center for Health Disparities Research, Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, Midwest AIDS Training & Education Center, Program for Advanced Cell Therapy, Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center, Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute. Researchers in the department represent all 11 of the subspecialty divisions. From basic science to translational, health services and clinical research, and large data/language modeling they work to transform medicine every day. Requirements

  • A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible professional experience with a record of significant accomplishments is required.
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of academic medicine’s multiple missions of education, research, clinical, and community service is required, as is supervisory and leadership experience.
  • This position requires strong leadership, ability to work within a matrixed-management structure, and demonstrated experience with faculty relations, team building, systems expertise, creativity, flexibility, collaboration, organization assessment, decision-making and interpersonal and staff development skills as well as the ability to operate in high-pressure situations.
  • A proven track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative and strong operation, management, organization, financial, analytical negotiation and conflict management skills is required.
  • Solid oral/written communication skills are required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing in an integrated, academic hospital or health system is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or closely related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in developing and administering budgets across multiple organizations including University of Wisconsin (UW) Health, University of Wisconsin (UW) - Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), and University of Wisconsin (UW) Foundation.
  • Oversees financial operations, including grants, contract, clinical, and other funds, to ensure adherence to prudent and generally accepted accounting practices and compliance with Federal, State, university, and sponsor rules, regulations, laws and bylaws
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Provides oversight and management of office, research, and clinical space on and off campus, department information systems, and regional network development
  • Responsible for communication and marketing of department activities, accomplishments and department philanthropic activities including meeting with and engaging potential donors
  • Provides leadership for the strategic and short-term planning processes as well as independently obtaining and validating data needed for strategic decision-making
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and management of the department's clinical, research, teaching and service programs and staff to ensure efficient and effective operations
  • Provides leadership and oversight of training programs including residency, fellowship, medical student, graduate student, and continuing medical education (CME) program
  • Provides leadership and administrative oversight of basic, clinical, and translational research programs including staffing, compliance, fiscal, information technology (IT), and facility needs
