About The Position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is the senior non‑clinical administrative leader responsible for the effective business, operational, and strategic management of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Working closely with the Associate Dean for Hospital Operations, the CAO ensures that business functions—including finance, human resources, facilities management, and information technology—operate cohesively to support exceptional patient care, high‑quality clinical teaching, and cutting‑edge research within a complex, multi‑specialty academic veterinary hospital. The CAO oversees day‑to‑day business operations, including program effectiveness, administrative coordination, fiduciary stewardship, and the strategic development of policies and procedures. Additionally, the CAO serves as the primary liaison between the hospital and university‑level administrative units, ensuring alignment with institutional policies, responsible resource management, and overarching strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or related field.
  • 10 years of related experience.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing and overseeing programs to support academic goals.
  • Ability to work with groups of people and be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team oriented.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or related field.
  • 10 years of leadership experience in healthcare, academic medicine, veterinary medicine, or complex institutional operations.
  • Experience in an academic or teaching hospital environment strongly preferred.
  • Financial management expertise including budgeting, forecasting, and revenue cycle oversight.
  • Demonstrated success managing large teams and multi‑department operations.
  • Supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Fiscal Management: Budgeting and forecasting: Lead development and oversight of hospital budgets, including clinical revenue, university funding, and capital projects. Resource allocation: Manage staffing models, equipment purchases, and supply chain needs across clinical and teaching functions. Financial stewardship: Support long‑term sustainability while balancing mission‑driven priorities. Supervision of team members
  • Leadership and Strategic Direction: Partner with hospital and college leadership to develop and execute long‑term plans for clinical services, teaching programs, and research support. Collaborate with leadership to provide strategic advice and guidance for operational success. Serve as the primary liaison between centralized services to ensure business operations support clinical operations. Determine key performance indicators for each department. Exercise discretion and handle sensitive and confidential data. Oversee the development and management of strategy and planning.
  • Customer and Stakeholder Relations: Ensure the organization’s activities align with the needs of internal and external stakeholders. Facilitate collaboration with university leadership and various stakeholders. Review reports and present findings to stakeholders, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Reporting: Ensure all financial activity is tracked and provide special analysis and reporting as needed. Assist in prioritizing, managing, and ensuring timely responses to external inquiries.
