About The Position

The Chief Accounting and Tax Officer is responsible for all accounting and tax functions at the University and for the Miami University Foundation (Foundation). The position ensures the accuracy and reliability of the accounting records and reports, including compliance with accounting standards (GASB and FASB), and develops and maintains an adequate system of internal control over the accounting records. The position is the primary liaison with the independent auditor and leads the annual close of the accounting system and the preparation of the financial statements and required disclosures. The position oversees all tax filings and is responsible for the design and maintenance of the chart of accounts and ledgers in the enterprise system (Workday).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance, a CPA license, and 7+ years of progressive leadership in accounting
  • Advanced knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable GASB and FASB standards
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws, including income, payroll, sales/use, and unrelated business income tax (UBIT)
  • Knowledge of financial reporting, regulatory filings, and statutory compliance requirements
  • Understanding of internal controls, audit standards, and risk management frameworks
  • Knowledge of higher education finance or large, complex organizational structures, including auxiliary business units and affiliated entities
  • Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, preferably Workday Financial Management
  • Ability to oversee complex accounting operations and tax strategies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information to executive leadership and governing boards
  • Leadership and development of high-performing accounting and tax teams
  • Project management skills, including the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives
  • Ability to ensure institutional compliance while balancing strategic priorities
  • Ability to influence executive leadership and provide trusted financial guidance

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and develops General Accounting, Accounts Payable and Tax Compliance Staff.
  • Manages the University’s general ledger and chart of accounts in fund accounting in accordance with GASB standards and manages the Foundation’s general ledger and chart of accounts, including all endowment and gift funds, in accordance with FASB accounting standards. Both general ledgers and chart of accounts are maintained in the enterprise system (Workday).
  • Manages the annual year-end university closing processes; establishes the year-end calendar dates and processing deadlines; monitors account reconciliations; prepare various financial workpapers and reports; works with staff and departments across the university and the Foundation to ensure fiscal year end entries are properly posted.
  • Manages the Miami University Foundation annual year-end closing process and audit; establishes the year-end calendar dates and processing deadlines; monitors account reconciliations; prepares various financial workpapers; works with staff and departments across campus to ensure fiscal year end entries are properly posted.
  • Assures ongoing compliance with both GASB/FASB standards for the University and the Foundation. Directs the implementation of new standards.
  • Prepares the annual audited financial report and related financial reports for both the University and the Foundation. Coordinates with Grants & Contracts and Investment Accountant on fiscal year end audit.
  • Reviews and analyzes financials on a monthly basis.
  • Reviews and approves the CAFR, HEI, IPEDS, and other financial regulatory reporting for the University.
  • Reviews the University’s unrelated business income and preparation of the IRS 990, 990-T forms and other tax-related reporting for the Foundation.
  • Ensures adherence to all state financial regulations and university and foundation financial policies.
