About The Position

We are seeking a Chemist to support laboratory packing (Lab Pack) operations, including hazardous waste characterization and compliant packaging of expired or unused laboratory chemicals. This role involves working onsite to ensure materials are properly identified, classified, and prepared for safe transportation and disposal in accordance with regulatory standards. This position is full-time and will be based out of Piketon, Ohio. This role is anticipated to be short-term (2 - 3 weeks). About the Site The DOE's Portsmouth Site, located in Piketon, Ohio, strives to effectively implement EM responsibilities, obligations and activities to accomplish environmental remediation actions in compliance with regulatory milestones and agreements; disposition legacy and newly generated waste; implement Cold Shutdown requirements; disposition of depleted uranium hexafluoride cylinders; and perform Decontamination and Decommissioning (energy.gov). Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field (preferred).
  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
  • Experience with lab packing, hazardous waste handling, or environmental services strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of RCRA and DOT regulations for hazardous materials.
  • Ability to identify chemical hazards and apply proper handling and packaging techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in laboratory and field environments, including lifting and handling chemical containers.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with laboratory cleanouts or chemical inventory management.
  • Familiarity with safety data sheets (SDS) and chemical compatibility.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (or ability to obtain).

Responsibilities

  • Perform onsite hazardous waste characterization in accordance with RCRA and DOT regulations.
  • Identify, segregate, and classify chemical wastes based on physical and chemical properties.
  • Package expired, unused, or unknown laboratory chemicals safely for transport, treatment, and disposal.
  • Ensure proper labeling, documentation, and manifesting of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and clients to support efficient lab pack operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of waste characterization, packing activities, and disposal documentation.
