About The Position

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full-time Chemist I position in the Laboratory Services Division, located in Oklahoma City, OK. This role is for an analytical chemist in the General Chemistry Section of the Laboratory Services Division. The Chemist I will perform routine analytical testing of feed and fertilizer samples, follow quality assurance and quality control protocols, evaluate generated data, prepare technical reports, provide remedial actions and recommendations, perform routine maintenance on equipment, and ensure a safe work environment. This is the basic level of the job family, involving routine entry-level work in evaluating regulations, applying them to analysis, preparing technical reports for special studies, and making recommendations on remedial actions to correct problems. In this role, they will perform tasks involved with routine chemical analysis and report preparation, and will assist with technical investigations, planning and implementing research projects, and complex chemical analysis. Assigned duties may include sample preparation and extraction, liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP), flow injection, wet chemical, biological, microbiological, and physical analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biological or environmental science
  • Knowledge of chemical laboratory testing procedures and equipment
  • Knowledge of instruments and test apparatus
  • Knowledge of the purpose of the chemical analysis being performed and of the materials being analyzed
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment
  • Ability to write technical reports
  • Ability to apply laboratory safety procedures
  • Must include a resume and college transcript with application documents
  • Subject to a twelve-month probationary period

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine analytical testing of feed and fertilizer samples

  • Analyze water, soil, waste, and agricultural samples to determine levels of compliance with state and federal regulations or applicable specifications
  • Implement the use of approved methods and procedures in the analysis of samples, and of Quality Assurance practices and procedures in all analytical and study processes
  • Develop methods and procedures needed for laboratory analyses used in the determination of quality, formulation standards and compliance where no approved procedures exist
  • Plan or aid in the planning of special studies requiring the collection and analysis of samples leading to the protection of the public health and the environment
  • Maintain all equipment related to analysis within the laboratory
  • Maintain supply inventories necessary to perform all laboratory analyses
  • May serve as an expert witness in the interpretation of laboratory analysis for the enforcement of state and federal regulations
  • Evaluate and prepare reports on the results of analyses and studies
  • Provide consultation on laboratory analyses and studies performed both within and outside of the laboratory for development of regulations and compliance standards, or evaluation of environmental situations
  • Research, develop and assist in the implementation of long term planning for the efficient use of the state’s air, water, land and agricultural resources
