Within ORES, the Chemical Safety Office staff and programs are essential to the operational backbone of the university’s research involving chemicals and controlled substances and compliance with applicable safety and hazardous materials waste regulations. Ensures the proper labeling, storage, shipment, disposal, and record keeping of regulated wastes. Supports the chemical inventory management system; uploads, troubleshooting, reconciliation, CAD clearance, etc. Performs routine inspections of laboratories, satellite accumulation areas, and waste buildings to ensure that proper safety procedures are being followed and compliance with regulatory requirements is maintained. Develops and implements chemical safety, hazardous waste, and laboratory safety training and DEA compliance programs. Assists laboratories in the chemical segregation according to compatible groupings; maintains a chemical inventory of free chemicals for redistribution; implements the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) RCRA-mandated hazardous waste reduction. Fulfills the duties of emergency response to chemical and laboratory incidents under the Georgia State University (GSU) Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Contingency Plan. Responds to regulatory and safety inquiries, incidents, emergencies, and site clean-ups. Coordinates the hazardous waste disposal with contractors and orders supplies from vendors. Prepares monthly generator and activity reports.
