The Chemical Engineer provides chemical engineering services to the GATX Rail organization relevant to railcar asset protection and integrity, commodity protection, and fleet compliance. It extends to both new and existing GATX Rail fleet cars.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Formal training in Chemical Engineering principles and analysis. Formal training in polymer chemistry is preferred. Training in applying Chemical Engineering principles and concepts to real-world industry problems is preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of Chemical Engineering principles and concepts.
  • Must have knowledge of which Chemical Engineering principles and analytical techniques apply to real-world industry problems.
  • Must be able to climb on physically and into railcars to inspect linings and exterior coatings.
  • Travel to repair facilities, manufacturing facilities, equipment vendor sites, and R&D laboratories.

Nice To Haves

  • AMPP Coatings Inspector Program, Level 1 Certification is preferred.
  • Professional Engineering License is preferred but not required.
  • 2 years' work experience in the application of Chemical Engineering theory and concepts to real-world rail industry problems, especially in the application and inspection of coatings and corrosion control/prevention.
  • 2 years' work experience developing material specifications for coatings, gaskets, tank materials of construction, tank surface preparation/cleaning.
  • 2 years' work experience implementing chemically related Department of Transportation (DOT) and Association of American Railroads (AAR) requirements in the railcar context.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for Chemical Engineering's asset protection and integrity activities
  • Development of paint and lining specifications and standards, gasket specifications, commodity compatibility and corrosion data, qualification inspection intervals, railcar surface preparation standards, and related fleet maintenance instructions, engineering notices, and standard work instructions (SWI).
  • Support GATX commercial and shop production activities through the Chemical Engineering inquiry process and change of service (COS)
  • Provide timely, technically supported responses.
  • Allocate responsibility for particular inquiries to appropriate Chemical Engineering group members.
  • Identify inquiries that require development of Chemical Engineering standards as opposed to one-time responses.
  • Provide technical support for Chemical Engineering's diagnostic and forensic activities.
  • Orchestration of field inspections related to paint and lining application or failures, corrosion damage, and gasket failure.
  • Work with equipment and coating vendors in order to obtain timely technical assistance
  • Support shop production (e.g. new paint application), field inspection, and equipment testing.
  • Research and develop latest equipment technology of potential benefit to GATX for consideration by senior members of the Chemical Engineering Group.
  • Support GATX rail shop cleaning activities, by developing and maintaining cleaning recipes/SWIs, and all related processes
  • Maintain safety data sheets (SDS')
  • Provide technical support to shop loading for cleaning approvals, and Facilities Engineering for equipment specifications related to cleaning processes.
