About The Position

Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment! Lake Rickabear Day Camp sits on 332 acres of land including a beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed lake, perfect for swimming, pedal boating, paddle boarding, and row boating. The Challenge Course Specialist is responsible for enriching the campers experience at camp through the development and delivery of challenge course activities that are appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities while maintaining safe programs as directed by Girl Scouts of the USA, American Camp Association and the New Jersey Department of Health and Youth Camp Services. Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Certification in challenge course and zip line with The Adventure Guild to be obtained via training and certification by camp prior to camp season.
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage campers and work with other staff in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere
  • Ability to teach skills in challenge course and zip line to campers of all ages and staff in a safe, inclusive, creative, and fun way
  • Ability to use sound judgement regarding safety procedures.
  • Must be attentive and timely.
  • Regularly speak, read, write, interpret, and respond to words in the English language.
  • Must be able to communicate well with other staff and community partners.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Hold or be willing to obtain current certification of standard First Aid and CPR (training to be provided).
  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain certification in challenge course and zip line with The Adventure Guild and archery with USA Archery to be obtained via training and certification by camp prior to camp season.
  • Schedule and develop age-appropriate programs and activities in camp through promotion and supervision of challenge course and zip line activities and games which will promote team building.
  • Maintain strict safety procedures set forth by GSNNJ.
  • Attend pre-camp training and conduct training to staff on challenge course and zip line areas.
  • Maintain communication with Unit Leaders, Counselors, and Junior Counselors regarding camper behavior and supervision.
  • Instruct and support a group of up to 20 girls, providing team building activities.
  • Facilitate zip line to all campers entering 4th grade and up.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise special programs for Special Interest Day.
  • Keep a supply of appropriate rainy day activity resources available.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of challenge course and zip line areas
  • Conduct safety check of equipment and safety procedures – make and/or report needed repairs and keep daily records of such.
  • Maintain files of ideas and directions of challenge course and zip line programs
  • Write and submit a seasonal report and evaluation of the season's program activities.
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights.
  • Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights not staying overnight for.
  • Promote high camper and staff morale.
  • Document and diligently report any health and welfare concerns to the Camp Health Supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
