Chair of Internal Medicine Charleston Area Medical Center Charleston, WV - United States Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), part of Vandalia Health, in Charleston, West Virginia, invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of Internal Medicine (Chair). The Chair will lead and support the academic, clinical, and research activities of the rapidly growing department with multiple divisions and an established training program. This is an outstanding opportunity to substantially build upon and establish new clinical and training programs for West Virginia's premier academic medical center. Charleston Area Medical Center Health System is a nonprofit, 982-bed regional referral center made up of seven hospitals as well as the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine and the CAMC Foundation. More than 1,100 providers are members of the medical and advanced practice staff of CAMC. CAMC prides itself as a leading teaching institution and academic medical center serving the healthcare needs of West Virginia and the surrounding region. Two regional medical school campuses, West Virginia University and West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, are located onsite at CAMC. Additionally, CAMC serves as a major clinical teaching site for other graduate medical education programs and undergraduate health sciences programs, hosting more than 1,000 students on any given day. Vandalia Health was formed in September 2022 through the combination of CAMC Health System and Mon Health System. Continuing this growth, several hospitals and another system, Davis Health, have also been added. With this extensive network featuring 17 hospitals, providers, outpatient locations, and telemedicine centers, Vandalia Health is providing care across West Virginia with additional locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader in internal medicine with a minimum of 10 years' experience as a departmental chair, division chief, program director, or equivalent clinical leadership role in an academic medical center or equally complex environment. Candidates must demonstrate a strong vision for achieving excellence in clinical care and an understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with running a large department within an academic medical center. Candidates must possess an M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree, board certification in internal medicine, and warrant qualification for appointment to Associate or Full Professor at the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine. Position Summary Overseeing all divisions within the Department of Medicine, the Chair holds accountability for setting a vision across the department in its clinical, education and research endeavors. Working with the faculty and creating a patient-centric culture, the Chair will lead to sustain high-level patient care, leading-edge range of clinical services, and exceed national quality standards while engaging faculty, residents, fellows, clinical and ancillary staff. The Chair will work with operational leadership to run the clinical mission across all divisions. Reporting Relationships The Chair of Medicine will report to the CAMC Chief Academic Officer regarding GME and clinical areas and be accountable to the WVU Medical School Charleston Campus Regional Campus Dean regarding WVU medical student education. The Chair will work closely with CAMC operational leaders to effectively oversee all clinical activities. Responsibilities The successful Chair candidate will: MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY · Provide leadership and administrative oversight to the CAMC department, including academic, patient care, and quality improvement functions. · Provide leadership and administrative oversight for accreditation and regulatory requirements significant to Medicine services and functions. · Serve as the key interface between CAMC administration operations management and the elected chief/medical staff structure. · Provide strategic direction and planning across Medicine Service Lines for CAMC and to strategically link CAMC state, regional and national forums on behalf of CAMC. · Facilitate and oversee efforts to recruit, develop and retain a provider and faculty team, and staff that meet CAMC's needs for assuring services to the CAMC community. · Work collaboratively to assure a team approach to education, clinical care and community service with respect to Medicine services. · Represent CAMC and engage in local, regional, state and national initiatives that support the mission of CAMC and the strategic vision of Medicine · Work cooperatively with other departments and Medical Directors to meet the educational and operational needs of CAMC DUTIES/FUNCTIONS · Facilitate appropriate forums for effective communication with CAMC and the Institute for Academic Medicine leadership. · Serve as faculty in the appropriate residency/fellowship program and provide administrative leadership and support as required by ACGME and CAMC. · Establish and sustain key work processes to address patient care structures, procedures and policy across all Department of Medicine Divisions. · Establish structures and key processes to address accreditation standards for ISO/DNV accreditation. · Develop and monitor strategic and annual plans for the Medicine department and it's Division's clinical service lines. · Maintain an integrative process for professional recruitment working collaboratively with the residency/fellowship program leaders, Division Chiefs, and CAMC Administration. · Provide leadership and direction to quality initiatives that link CAMC objectives and strategic priorities; Provide reports including an annual report on the state of the Department's services to the Chief Quality Officer and the Board Committee on Quality as required. · Identify/develop/facilitate monitoring systems for evaluation and reporting of quality performance of the department. · Serve as principal leadership liaison between the Department of Medicine leadership, elected medical staff leadership and other physician leadership forums as appropriate to represent Medicine initiatives at CAMC. · Serve as principal physician leadership for all academic matters, including interface with the CAMC GME structure, GME Committee and other forums as required by all GME programs at CAMC. · Support the development of residency programs/fellowships, engage in and support Program Director and faculty leadership development. Support and lead development initiatives for staff, faculty and others in the department. · Provide leadership to address clinical learning environment requirements and to support “Best Place to Learn” initiatives. · Establish or maintain performance review and monitoring systems for physician and provider performance assuring standardization and alignment as required by CAMC. · Manage and oversee faculty in the department including the Residency and Fellowship Program Directors and Division Chiefs.
