About The Position

As a department chair, the individual should have general administrative responsibility for, as well as participate in, the educational, research, patient care, and service programs of the department. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to: The duties and responsibilities as chair include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Continuously evaluate and seek opportunities for growth, expansion and improvement of the educational, research, service, and patient care programs; faculty and staff performance; and administrative processes of the department and make appropriate recommendations to the Vice Dean regarding all issues of concern to the department: a. Enhance faculty recruitment with particular attention to gender equity, diversity and inclusion; b. Pursue contracted clinical services with other entities; c. Consider the establishment of a faculty practice (non-hospital based); d. Conduct annual performance evaluations of all faculty and establish annual goals and objectives for individual faculty members; e. Optimize the quality of the residency training program.
  • Work to maintain a balanced budget annually for the department, as well as the distribution formula for the department’s faculty practice earnings, and manage the expenses of clinical practice.
  • Achieve budget transparency and enhance the understanding and involvement of the department’s faculty.
  • Optimize the operation of departmental programs and clinical affiliations.
  • Work with other departments and centers to achieve mutually agreed upon interdepartmental goals across the research, educational, and clinical mission areas.
  • Ensure that the clinical faculty of the department provide timely reporting and attestation of effort at University Hospital in compliance with the Clinical Services Agreement between NJMS and UH.
  • Assure departmental compliance with all University policies and mandatory training requirements for faculty and staff, including but not limited to, compliance, HIPAA , Outside Activity Questionnaires, Faculty Time and Effort Reporting.
  • Regularly attend the monthly department chairs meetings, Faculty Council meetings, and other standing and ad hoc committee meetings as assigned by the Vice Dean or Dean.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Vice Dean and/or Dean.
