About The Position

The First Assist Certified Surgical Technologist (CST FA) within the Franciscan family performs various tasks supporting perioperative services, including preparation of operating room, transport of patients, supplies, equipment, and specimens. The CST FA plays the interprofessional role of assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other members of an operating room team by preparing patients for their procedures and sterilizing equipment, and providing technical assistance. The CST FA delivers aid in exposure, hemostasis, wound closure, and other technical functions during operative procedures. Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Graduate of Accredited Surgical Technologist Program
  • 1 year Sugery Experience
  • Certified First Assistant (CFA) - The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Basic Life Support Program (BLS) - American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for surgical procedures by obtaining appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment, and appropriate records for specific surgical procedures; open surgical supplies/equipment, clean and prepare instruments for sterilization process and restock pre-operative carts.
  • Perform retractor placement and manipulation, and management of instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeon’s view; anticipate exposure needs based on knowledge of the surgeon’s preference, procedure, and anatomical structures.
  • Provide postoperative assistance by selecting and applying appropriate dressings, securing drainage systems, conducting room turnover, and transport of the patient to bed and to PACU, as necessary.
  • Scrub basic and complex surgical procedures for general, orthopedic, OB/GYN, genitourinary, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgical procedures, and other surgical procedures.
  • Conduct various types of wound closure and suturing, apply skin staples, and appropriately approximate the skin to best facilitate the healing process.
