About The Position

Shriners Children’s Philadelphia is seeking a part-time (0.5 FTE) Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) to join its pediatric anesthesia care team in a physician-supervised, collaborative practice model. The CRNA will provide anesthesia care for a complex pediatric surgical population across spine, lower extremity, hand, urologic, and craniofacial procedures, with approximately 98% of cases requiring general anesthesia, often combined with regional techniques. Each case is staffed by both a CRNA and an anesthesiologist, with student nurse anesthetists participating in care delivery within an academic environment. The role supports an average of 3–10 cases per day depending on case duration, with operating room coverage typically from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., no call responsibilities, and no weekend or holiday coverage. The position is scheduled in 10-hour shifts with flexibility in assigned workdays and no clinic responsibilities. The CRNA will report to the Chief of Anesthesia and work alongside a multidisciplinary anesthesia team with dedicated anesthesia technician support. Qualified candidates will have a strong background in pediatric anesthesia, including care of syndromic patients, pediatric IV placement, arterial line management, and advanced airway skills such as Glidescope use, with experience in double-lumen airways considered beneficial.

Requirements

Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthesia educational program.
Minimum of 1-3 years of clinical experience with pediatric patients preferred.
Current certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).
Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice
Must possess eligibility for active DEA
Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
In-depth knowledge of pediatric anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and anesthetic implications for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
Proficient in pediatric airway management techniques and use of age-specific anesthesia equipment.
Strong assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills in high-stress environments.
Effective communication and collaboration with pediatric patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
Familiarity with institutional safety protocols, regulatory standards, and infection control practices.
Competency in electronic documentation systems and anesthesia information management systems (AIMS).

Responsibilities

Conduct pre-anesthesia assessments, including review of medical history, physical examinations, and evaluation of pediatric patients' developmental, psychological, and physiological needs.
Develop and implement individualized anesthesia care plans in accordance with patient-specific factors and procedural requirements.
Administer general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care to pediatric patients under approved clinical protocols and in accordance with institutional guidelines.
Monitor patient vital signs, anesthetic depth, and physiological responses throughout perioperative phases; initiate appropriate interventions as needed.
Manage pediatric airway, ventilation, hemodynamic status, and fluid therapy using evidence-based clinical practices.
Perform age-appropriate induction and emergence of anesthesia, including administration of preoperative sedation and postoperative pain control.
Document all aspects of anesthesia care in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards.
Respond to pediatric emergencies involving airway management, cardiovascular support, and code situations; participate in rapid response teams as appropriate.
Ensure the availability and safe use of anesthesia equipment, medications, and supplies tailored to pediatric populations.
Collaborate with anesthesiologists and multidisciplinary teams to optimize pediatric patient outcomes.
Participate in departmental quality assurance initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and pediatric anesthesia education or training as required.
Maintain current licensure, certification, and competencies in pediatric anesthesia, including compliance with continuing education requirements.
Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.
