About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician III primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This role operates under the supervision of a Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. Key responsibilities include computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The CPT III must have adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication skills, and apply proper phlebotomy technique for all patient age groups. The position involves processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank), preparing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, managing routine supplies, maintaining cleanliness of work and storage areas, and operating automated laboratory instrumentation. Additional duties may include picking up samples at the hospital/OR, assisting lab specialties with sample sorting and storage, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. The role may also involve working across multiple departments or during night/graveyard shifts, and assisting with staffing issues.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience, required.

  • Current and valid state certification as a CPT preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory.
  • Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
  • Possess adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
  • Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens.
  • Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  • Stock and order routine supplies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas.
  • Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • May assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.
  • May work multi-departments or night shift/graveyard shift.
  • Resolving staffing issues.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
