About The Position

Banner Boswell Medical Center, a 410-bed acute-care hospital nationally recognized as one of Arizona’s Best Hospitals, is seeking a Patient Care Assistant for its 4th Floor General Medical Surgical Oncology Unit. This unit specializes in diseases of the elderly, handling general surgeries (urology, plastics, gyn, abdominal) and overflow medical patients with conditions like pneumonia, GI issues, and skin disorders, with the capability to flex to 34 beds. The Patient Care Assistant will be a valued member of a passionate team, responsible for ongoing patient data collection and documentation in medical records, and providing various unit support functions to ensure efficient operation of the nursing unit/department. The role focuses on delivering routine patient care to promote comfort and contribute to the overall patient plan of care, working in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment with a strong focus on customer service, interacting with staff, patients, families, and physicians.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in state of practice (required for new hires and transfers; for Tucson, required for new hires, existing incumbents may not transfer out of geographical market without meeting CNA requirement).
  • Skills and abilities typically attained with 1 year of medical clerical experience; preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior experience in customer service.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Computer literacy and keyboarding skills.
  • Depending on department assignment, receive a minimum passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG test with accurate identification of all lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity.
  • Successful completion of either a unit approved basic electrocardiogram interpretation course or electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on the job training.
  • Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment.
  • An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
  • Employees working for Banner Home Care AZ must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance in activities of daily living and complete necessary tasks to promote patient health, including assisting patients with basic hygiene needs, maintaining an optimum level of mobility and providing assistance with nutritional intake as needed.
  • Collect patient specimens and data, including vital signs, input/output and other delegated measurements in accordance with unit/facility policy and standards of care.
  • Document objective data and routine aspects of patient care.
  • Assist in the transportation of patient specimens.
  • Recognize and report abnormalities and/or changes in the patient’s health status and responses to treatment to a licensed professional.
  • Promote continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for which care is provided.
  • Perform procedures and use equipment as delegated by a licensed professional, consistent with demonstrated competencies and according to state scope of practice; procedures may include blood draws, foley catheters removal, EKGs, and EKG monitoring.
  • Provide necessary supplies, support and assistance to medical staff and patients for unit specific procedures, under the direct supervision of a licensed professional.
  • Perform receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective flow of communication and information throughout the department.
  • Participate in the resolution of customer problems or collect necessary data and follow through to appropriate person for problem resolution.
  • Maintain a complete patient record with admission, transfer, and discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
  • Ensure that all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into the patient’s record.
  • Ensure that charting forms are labeled and accessible if they are needed.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of frequently used, patient education materials.
  • Assist in the ordering of patient specimens.
  • May transcribe and process physician orders effectively using the electronic medical record.
  • Maintain adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies and complete requisition forms when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Reconcile supply order upon delivery.
  • Monitor and track the use and whereabouts of electronic equipment such as patient ID scanners and lap top computers.
  • Ensure that all electronic equipment are accounted for and in working order.
  • Assist with transporting patients, including pre-operative and immediate post-operative patients to critical care unit (based on area of assignment).
  • Participate in OR room turnover (based on area of assignment).
