Ophthalmic Assistants provide vision care under the supervision of a licensed ophthalmologist and assist with taking patient histories, performing diagnostic tests and procedures, patient scheduling, and exam room preparation. A caregiver in this position works 7:00am to 5:30pm.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of the written exam for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
  • Recent graduate of an Ophthalmic Technology Program (not yet COT certified)
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
  • One year of experience providing direct patient care under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist
  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
  • May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
  • Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • You will be required to comply with this program, which will include obtaining an influenza vaccination on an annual basis or obtaining an approved exemption.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties and perform basic patient care as directed by a physician or supervisor.
  • Receive and prepare patients for examination and treatment under the direction of a supervisor or physician.
  • Perform routine screening tests and document patient information in the patient medical record.
  • Stock and maintain exam rooms with equipment and supplies.
