About The Position

This position works in cooperation with the unit's patient care team, under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, to assist in providing a variety of established and accepted nursing procedures and clerical functions. The role assists patients in meeting self-care and daily needs. This position is represented by RCHEA. Requirements

  • BLS Certification following American Heart Association guidelines required (no other cards accepted)
  • Current California CNA license required
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology

Nice To Haves

  • High School graduate or GED preferred
  • Six months experience in patient care in an acute care hospital preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing a variety of established and accepted nursing procedures and clerical functions.
  • Assist patients in meeting self-care and daily needs.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care/service appropriate to the age of the patients/individuals served.
  • Demonstrates and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients/individuals status and interpret relative to his age-specific needs, and to provide the care/service needed.
  • Answers patient call light; attends to patient needs; makes round to assigned patients.
  • Promptly answers patients call light whether that of assigned patient or not.
  • Anticipates needs of patients and checks on assigned patients in a consistent manner.
  • Answers intercom when nursing personnel are unavailable.
  • Records and delivers request to necessary nursing personnel.
  • Assists in and accompanies patient in the admission, transfer and discharge procedure.
  • Always uses proper techniques of body mechanics to protect patient and personal safety.
  • Provides for patients safety by using preventative safety measures, i.e., side rails, restraints, patient education, etc.
  • Performs and documents patients admission and discharge date correctly and accurately, using the established department procedure.
  • Assists in preparation of units, patient rooms and beds using the established department procedures.
  • Checks patient unit to ensure that all supplies and equipment required for admission are present.
  • Collects and transports specimens.
  • Always correctly labels type of specimen collected including patients name and room number in accordance with established department policy.
  • Maintains and meets expectations on time for all competencies, license, certifications and education requirements as outlined by local administration, Adventist Health (AH), The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and all other regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in and regularly contributes to Nursing Care Plans for proper treatment and care of patient including performing routine treatment procedures.
  • Assists licensed staff in complicated treatment procedures.
  • Records reports to RN on duty any treatment results, observations, patient complaints and other pertinent information regarding the condition of patients.
  • Performs personal care services to and for patients in providing general care according to department established procedures as well as shift schedule.
  • Performs various general support functions for unit including: Receives, greets and directs patients, visitors and hospital personnel arriving on the unit or calling the patient care unit.
  • Receives and distributes mail, flowers and various other items for patients on the unit.
  • Assists patients with handling and care of clothing and other personal property.
  • Assumes responsibility for patients clothing and personal property, i.e., prosthetic devices, glasses, etc.
  • Secures items in accordance with established department policy.
  • Orders supplies weekly in accordance with established departmental policy.
  • Prepares patient for meals, serves and removes trays, assists with meals or feeds patient, positions patient to avoid choking and to ensure ease in eating.
  • Provides general nursing care under the supervision of licensed staff, i.e., positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying and utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, urinal or commode.
  • Provides pre-operative and post-operative care to patients.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure and intake output measurements.
  • Willingly performs other duties and innovations as assigned.
