Under the direct supervision of the Clinic Manager, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) performs selected patient-care tasks for patients of all ages, gender, cultures, and backgrounds in the clinic setting. In addition, laboratory and office duties are performed as needed. This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of medical assistant education with a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited program and certification with the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (RMA), or National Association for Health Professionals (NRCMA) within 6 months of hire.
  • Current CMA certification with the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA), or National Healthcareer Association (CCMA) and completion of a medical assistant education program approved by Broadlawns Medical Center.
  • Staff continuously employed in a CMA position with Broadlawns Medical Center as of September 1, 2025, will maintain qualifications as listed at the time of hire.
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete Broadlawns Medical Center Pharmacology requirements prior to providing care independently.
  • Ability to successfully pass Basic Life Support Certification (Health Care Provider), if not already current with certification, prior to providing care independently

Responsibilities

  • Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms for medical provider visit.
  • Obtains and documents in Meditech system subjective data (chief complaint and allergies). Obtains and documents objective data (vital signs and weight).
  • Communicates to provider and/or other care team members information about the patients; any problems, needs, or changes in patient’s status.
  • Anticipates and prepares the exam room with equipment and supplies required for the visit and assists the health care team with exams and procedures.
  • Provides basic education; explains lab/diagnostic test(s) to the patient including proper preparation and provides appropriate handouts to patients appropriate to their age, learning considerations and identified needs.
  • Administers medications or treatments to the patient as ordered by the provider (per medical assistant scope of practice). Utilizes proper procedure with special consideration for patient safety.
  • Utilizes universal precautions, assists in obtaining specimens from patients (venipuncture, cultures, etc.) and forwards to laboratory as applicable.
  • Performs lab testing (i.e. urine dip, pregnancy test, hemoccult, hemocue, strep screen) including all quality controls as applicable and documents all results comprehensively and accurately in the chart and maintains all laboratory/diagnostic test logs.
  • Assists other members of the team to include, but not limited to, answering incoming phone calls, preparing charts, scheduling and other office tasks required to keep the clinic operating smoothly.
  • Assists in pre-chart planning for incoming patients.
  • Demonstrates an ability to remain calm and professional during periods of peak activity.
  • Participates in the training and orientation and education of new employees.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment and participates in maintaining equipment and supplies in exam rooms and nursing station areas.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing understanding of Corporate Compliance issues.
  • Participates in planning changes and improvements for the clinic.
  • Participates in the team approach in Process and Quality improvements for the clinic as requested by clinic supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by manager/designee.
  • Demonstrates and supports service excellence according to BMC Employee Expectations for excellence at all times.
  • Demonstrates ability to consistently meet manager requests, committee responsibilities, and Performance Improvement data collection as outlined by supervisor.
  • Demonstrates commitment to career growth and competence. This will be demonstrated by the completion and documentation of all competencies, clinic specific skills, HealthStream, annual in-services, and corporate compliance.
