Requirements

  • Meets criteria for Diabetes Educator Practice Level 3 as defined by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists, with more than 5 years of direct engagement or care in diabetes as a nurse or dietitian
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the single State of Georgia or Multi-State through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact or Registered Dietitian license
  • Credentialed by the Certification Board for Diabetes Care & Education (CBDCE) as a Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist (CDCES, previously CDE) or credentialed through the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) with Board Certification in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association within 30 days of employment
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Good basic computer skills, e.g., understands and uses Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint and Word and willing to learn Access and Excel

Responsibilities

  • Delivers family-centered diabetes education to patients ages newborn to 21 years.
  • Determines appropriate educational plan for family and patient based on learning assessment with consideration for growth and development, psychosocial, and emotional factors.
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge of diabetes by providing current, fact-based information.
  • Provides education that reflects the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.
  • Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.
  • Maintains and enhances knowledge of current diabetes self-management practices and helps to implement changes in diabetes program as standards of practice change.
  • Meets all in-service requirements as outlined by human resources requirements.
  • Assists in developing curriculum and implementing policies and procedures that guide and support the diabetes program and the system.
  • Acts flexible with scheduling to meet departmental needs, including cross campus coverage on a regular basis.
  • Handles conflicting demands on time and is able to prioritize issues efficiently.
