Train to perform all duties related to the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment—following strict procedures to ensure patient safety.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent with no experience
- Must be able to stand for the entire shift.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 35 pounds.
- Employees in a Central Sterile position on or before 12/27/2020 are grandfathered and do not need certification unless moving to a position that requires it.
- Certification required for employees in PA and NY facilities (MD facilities are excluded).
- New hires in PA and NY have 18 months from hire to obtain certification.
- Act 31, 33, 34, 73 clearances with renewal
Nice To Haves
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Surgical Technician or Sterile Processing program (preferred)
- 1 year of experience within UPMC
Responsibilities
- Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments manually and mechanically
- Assemble surgical trays and set up case carts per procedure requirements
- Monitor and document sterilizer parameters; troubleshoot equipment
- Maintain inventory and ensure proper storage and distribution
- Follow infection control, safety, and sterile processing protocols
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments
- Participate in performance improvement and educational programs
- Demonstrate accountability, time management, and healthy work habits
- Build positive relationships and mentor others
