About The Position

The Central Processing Technician is responsible for the complete processing of medical items, including decontamination, high-level disinfection, wrapping, packaging, and sterilization of all instrumentation. This role involves running machine test strips, documenting results, and ensuring proper sterilization before delivery to various hospital areas like the Storeroom/Outreach and nursing units. Additionally, the technician collects dirty instrumentation, replenishes medical equipment on nursing units, and refurbishes specialty carts. The position requires maintaining current knowledge in sterilization processes, effective interpersonal communication with OR staff and other healthcare team members, and performing all tasks with precision and accuracy. Candidates must have a High School Diploma and at least 1 year of hospital experience, with Central Processing experience preferred. National certification is required within the first year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and decontaminate all items requiring processing, including but not limited to OR instrumentation/Case Carts, small equipment and facility and departmental needs.
  • High Level Disinfection of non-sterilized items for use.
  • Run machine test strips for instruments on cart wash and ultrasonic washers to show proper function of machine. Document results.
  • Wrap, peel pack and place in rigid containers all instrumentation for sterilization.
  • Sterilization of all peel packaging, rigid and wrapped instrumentation for use.
  • Empty all autoclave (instrumentation) racks of processed instrumentation for designated storage.
  • Sign off on indicator check sheet every A.M. to assure sterilization /HLD of all items before delivery.
  • After sterilization, deliver processed items to appropriate areas (Storeroom/Outreach, floors).
  • Collect dirty instrumentation/small equipment on nursing units for processing and return to unit.
  • Replenish medical equipment required on nursing units and refurbish specialty carts.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the sterilization process.
