The Central Pharmacy Intern (YR2) position is integral to the Pharmacy department's mission, focusing on ensuring patients receive the correct medication safely and promptly, always under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. This role requires the intern to develop a thorough understanding of the drug distribution system and to become proficient in all tasks related to delivering medications to patient care areas. Key aspects of the role include utilizing relevant computer software and gaining practical experience in the interpretation, verification, order entry, compounding, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals and related supplies. Additionally, the Pharmacy Intern may be involved in providing drug information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Pharmacy/Pharmaceutical Studies required
  • Pharmacy Intern [State License] - Generic - HR Only required
  • Pharmacy Experience 1-2 years required
  • Ability to learn computer and application skills as applicable to the role.
  • Ability to interact with and work around people.
  • Ability to make judgments in demanding situations.
  • Ability to react to frequent changes in duties and volume of work.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to listen empathetically.
  • Ability to logically organize details.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Work collaboratively with the treatment team to maximize individual patient outcomes.
  • Perform medication history interviews, first dose teaching, food-drug interaction counseling, discharge counseling, assessment of education, and adherence.
  • Create updated medication lists for patients upon discharge from a hospital stay or at the end of a clinic appointment.
  • Counsel patients on prescription and over-the-counter medications and devices.
  • Monitor medication therapies through performing profile reviews, interpreting laboratory values, and ensuring drug regimens are consistent with medication use guidelines and protocols.
