About The Position

The Center for the Homeless Leader leads a small group of fellow students in a service experience at the Center for the Homeless once a week. Your tasks will include driving to the Center for the Homeless, serving as the primary point-person for the Center for the Homeless, training your team to provide child care and assist with food recovery, and leading weekly reflections. You’ll get to know one of the organizations doing amazing work in South Bend, and build community with a small group of students interested in supporting their community. CFAM welcomes applications from students committed to radical hospitality from any faith tradition or no faith tradition. To qualify for this position, you must be a current Saint Mary’s student and eligible for Federal Work Study.

Requirements

  • Driver’s license and comfortable driving groups
  • Comfortable with leading group conversations
  • Committed to mutuality, commitment, reflection, and justice in interactions
  • Passion for supporting your community and learning from Community Partners
  • Experience working with diverse populations in a spirit of cultural humility
  • Excited to work with and coordinate students from diverse backgrounds
  • Current student of Saint Mary’s College eligible for Federal Work Study/Community Service

Responsibilities

  • Lead a weekly team of fellow students to the Center for the Homeless
  • Serve as a child care provider
  • Pick up food recovery from the Dining Hall and transport to CFH kitchen
  • Provide on-site leadership for students
  • Communicate with your team on a weekly basis. Email team members each week reminding them of service or upcoming events.
  • Coordinate logistical details for your team and the Center for the Homeless
  • Facilitate the process of obtaining clearances and waivers for your team
  • Track your team’s weekly participation
  • Serve as primary point person for the Center for the Homeless
  • Serve as the Saint Mary’s-approved driver each week
  • Obtain Saint Mary’s approval to drive CFAM cars
  • Follow CFAM procedures for checking out cars
  • Alert CFAM coordinator of maintenance needs for cars
  • Facilitate meaningful reflection during Orientation, Closing, and once a week with your team
  • Provide orientation and training to your volunteers at Beyond the Belle Orientation
  • Facilitate meaningful reflections at the end of each service experience
  • Ensure that volunteers understand the importance and value of reflection
  • Lead more extensive reflections during the Closing Reflection
  • Attend weekly Community Engagement Leader meeting
